Situated in the village of Galgate south of lancaster is the 19th century Silk Mill. The silk mill has been revived and revitalized. A grade two listed building. The four architects commissioned have done a great job and managed to retained all of the historical features. The five storey red brick building has been transformed into student accommodation. Modern and up to date facilities, including a gymnasium, communial area and reception situated in the basement. An interesting project.
For a couple on a mini break, this student accommodation, is a bit weird. The worst thing being in the flat we were in, is that the double bed that is shoved into a recess. As a 6 footer, I didn't fit into the recess, to get out in the middle of the night I had to either climb over my wife, or try and get round the recess and out of the bottom of the bed without banging my head on the TV that overhangs the gap.nThere's no table for two people to eat, the handle for the window is 11 feet in the air. The left wardrobe door doesn't open fully because it hits the door closer, which ironically, doesn't actually work. The shower is useless. The WiFi isn't amazing. At night the noise from the extractors is loud.nIt's a real shame that these small but infuriating issues exist because the cleanliness is excellent and the fit and finish of the room is very high. The accommodation is listed elsewhere as an apartment, which might make you think it's larger than it actually is. It's a little smaller than a premiere inn room. Very modern, quite cool, but impractical for anything more than a night or two.
Galgate Mill ReviewnnI have finally completed my masters and left this awful building. When I first arrived to my internal studio I was immediately met with a humid and very warm room but I was assured that it would be cool due to the airflow system installed, unfortunately this was far from true as there aren’t any cavity walls so all the heat just accumulated in the building, there wasn’t a window which opened either as I had stupidly gone for one of the internal studios because they were reasonably priced or so I thought. Whilst the studios look very modern and very stylish, it also comes with very modern problems, for starters the shower was an eco electric shower which gave out boiling hot water for about 30 seconds and then just streamed out freezing cold water with hardly any pressure. Both the bathroom tap and kitchenette tap also gave out hot water but only for 30 seconds too and then it was freezing cold, they were high pressure taps so if you hadn’t used them for about an hour and went to use them again they would give out water at very high pressure which would splash absolutely everywhere.nnThe developers of this building must have either been dumb or on some form of D***s because they decided to put laminate flooring in the bathroom which was very humid as again, NO WINDOWS so I had to clean them and air out the room every morning to get all the humidity out as to not damage them and lose my deposit. The WiFi, which was described as being 1000 mbps up/down, was also very appalling as the speed dropped to 1 or 2 mbps this is not a typo at peak hours. Speaking of WiFi, there wasn’t any Ethernet points within the studio either which meant I couldn’t connect devices which weren’t WiFi enabled.nnMoving on to the kitchenette, it was good except for the fact that both my stove top and oven were right below the fire alarm which was connected to the whole building and steam from my cooking would rise straight up to it and set it off, because of this I would have to open my studios entrance door and place a fan which would blow in the direction of the stove top to stop steam getting up to the fire alarm, the extraction fan didn’t help either since it was very small and also because it only covered about half of the stove top.nnThe built in wardrobe was also designed very poorly as it had a shelf which could only be reached by someone who is about 7 feet tall so it was an absolute nightmare for me as I’m not gifted with the gene of good height. The wardrobe was also not placed in a good location as the wardrobe door would hit the door closer of the entrance door which, surprise surprise, didn’t work.nnFinally we move onto the management company, GOLDINGS ESTATE MANAGEMENT, which were absolutely awful as they offered no customer service, I had told them about all of the problem which were fixable such as the shower and tap but they made no effort to rectify them. The building is now under new management, from what I have seen, so I don’t know how good they are but I would recommend you steer clear of this accommodation and look for something in the town centre or opt for on campus accommodation.
One of the best students’ accommodations in the area. A listed old mill refurbished and converted into a modern, practical and comfortable student accommodation close to the university with professional management company that takes care of everything.nVery recommended.
Great student accommodation, really modern & nice amenities
