I had a two night stay in one of the executive suites in the main building. The room was gorgeous, beautifully decorated and very large! There was a great selection of tea, coffee and biscuits provided in the suite. The staff were all lovely, the breakfast was great, and the location is fantastic. I was on the top floor, which was lovely and quiet. I felt like I was the only person staying on that floor, which is a testament to how peaceful it was! However, whoever had cleaned the room prior to my check in had left the windows open in February! so it was freezing cold. After shutting the windows and plugging in the two small electric heaters provided, the room was still VERY cold during the whole of my stay. The underfloor heating was on but there were no controls in the room to turn it up. Whenever I was in my room, I had to get under the bed covers and keep both heaters beside me to take the edge off the chill. There were no extra blankets provided in the room. Easily one of the best hotels I've stayed in, but had to knock off a star due to the cold.
This is supposed to be superior service- it most certainly is not. I have been a customer for years and have always experienced superior food and service. Unfortunately, the service has become quite unpleasant. It appears that no one knows what they are doing, questions are unable to be answered, bookings are messed up, food orders are incorrect and the general attitude is really quite unpleasant. What a shame.
Great location but disappointed with the service and food. We had a work meeting in the Library room and the 5 star standards were not seen, the shelves were dusty, furniture scuffed, the same can be said about the rest of the premises, toilets have chipped seats, dirty walls in the restaurant, 1 set of windows clean right next to the other that you can't even see through. Vegan food options are an absolute joke -they just remove the cheese, don't know how the chef isn't embrassed to serve a bunch of salad leaves with 3 little beetroots, some walnuts and apple and call it a meal, it's 2024 and there are so many vegan options available, you can do better!
The Room we had in the Main Building was lovely although the bedroom decor was a bit shabby & could really do with a bit of renovation, I.E wallpaper really needs updating it has seen much better days. Bathroom was excellent. Staff service was excellent. This is a really lovely hotel in a very prime location. Prices are very fair if the room was updated. Food was superb. Drinks are a bit pricey but your staying in a great hotel so live a little.
The hotel is ok, I wouldn’t class it as a 5 star. There was music blasting through the halls at around 2am which seemed to be coming from the bar area it’s a Thursday I was then woken up at 8am by the cleaners in the hall way with the hoovers going, shouting to each other. There are no additional locks on the bedroom doors. The dressing gowns provided smell like a chip shop fryer. The rooms need a refresh, wallpaper hanging off etc. There’s no instruction on the parking gate if you arrive at night. Nice hotel but certainly not 5 star.
My husband and I dined in The Reading Room last night and couldn’t not leave a review. The food was absolutely out of this world! We had the vegetarian tasting menu and it was truly devine, each course was so beautiful executed!! Highly recommendService: 5/5
Stayed for our anniversary on a deal with dinner and breakfast. The room was amazing, as was the service and location of the hotel but the set dinner menu was poor the chicken breast resembled school dinner fare and the breakfast was just OK. Book the room but save your money and go to The Thames Lido for dinner and Bills for breakfast for a better experience!
------------------------------------ Edit, after call from The Roseate - very kind man apologising for our experience - all is forgiven. Many thanks for the call. K rgds, Jon ------------------------------------ We booked the Valentine's Day Five Course Tasting Menu - the food was lovely, although overall experience was disappointing, especially for the price around £200 for 2 people. The Valentine's experience was set in the main restaurant, although we were placed at the side, initially right next to the bar, which was very loud - understandability with staff coming and going - making cocktails, rushing around, banging doors / cupboards etc - not a romantic setting. Can't understand why they have tables in such awkward locations - we booked early too, hoping to be in the main area, although this was massively overpacked. We requested to be moved, and thankfully was moved a few tables down, although now right next to the main door, where people would be coming and going - again door banging shut each time. This was the only option unfortunately. Service was slow - part of the problem I believe is they had overbooked - staff were stretched beyond reasonable means. Seemed little thought had been given about the Valentine's experience too - i.e. we were handed a Valentine's cocktail menu with titles, but no descriptions of ingredients, there was no particular valentines theme in the restaurant, i.e. no candles, decorations etc. It was just felt like an overpacked / overpriced restaurant with slow service. Another example, we were only asked for drinks once, which took about 30 minutes arrive - by which time we had already finished the first 2 courses. I tried flagging down staff later for drinks to no avail. Although we were asked if we'd like another drink at the end of meal - by which time we were ready to leave. The food was great though - compliments to chef and kitchen staff. A real shame let down by service, environment and management.
WOW!! What a hotel, the staff where AMAZING!! all smiles at reception, really welcoming, The building and decor are absolutely STUNNING, I stay in the house building but will Definatly b booking the traditional building next time, not to take anything away from the house building room was HUGE really modern and comfortable, me and my wife loved it!! Decent parking as it has it own car park, but is 1st come, first serve, Great location near all the high streets, restaurants and bars, the station is also only a stone throw away!! Visited the spa, for a couples massage which was LOVELY, Really can't say enough good things about this hotel, a real hidden gem in Reading and can't wait to go back!!
Was this an off-night in the restaurant? A savoury roulade should surely be a roll of two different meats with contrasting flavours; the chicken and rabbit version presented here was a virtually flavourless and suspiciously cold lump with silly dabs of fruit and vegetables that did nothing for the dish overall. Two scallops in our friend's starter was simply mean, though the cooking was fair enough. If you are paying £32 for a lemon sole, you expect there to be evidence of a complete fish on the plate; we should have been warned when three of us ordered this main course, while other diners were tucking into theirs, and this did not seem to be a problem in the kitchen. On the plate were two tiny fillets, which had certainly come out of the freezer, with mussels that had the unmistakable scent of shellfish from a jar, while the globe artichoke, now out of season, could similarly only have come from a jar with its flavour of vinegar. The lamb - promised pink - was overcooked, so its provenance could have been anywhere, and again for the price the portion was mean. We gave up at this point and declined the dessert menu; in fairness we should mention that the bread and excellent butter was a triumph but arrived at the same time as the starters. After all the hype, we were very disappointed with this version of fine dining.
