Lovely dog friendly inn with great staff We arrived in this quaint village in the middle of a sweltering heatwave to check in for one night. We were able to do some drinks in the beautiful shaded garden while waiting for the room to be ready. The room was immaculate. Everything you might need was present tea and coffee making sets, a common fridge with two types of milk, hair dryer and even an ironing board, iron and steamer! The puppy received a small bed and a water dish which was a nice touch. The shower pressure was excellent as well. The best part was that they had already set up a ventilator for us and made the room cool for us. That’s an attention to service that’s remarkable. We had a lovely dinner and left after breakfast. The staff were kind, friendly and very attentive. We were even able to store our puppy food with their refrigerator! Highly recommend to those travelling with dogs.
Met with family for much needed get together. Gorgeous pub, attentive service and amazing food. Crab pate and gin trifle were my favourite. Although some items missing off menu they had replaced with amazing alternatives. Everything cooked to perfection. We shall be back. The pheasant wallpaper is worth seeing too. Loved this venue
Wonderful welcoming pub. It was an unplanned visit as we were unaware of the area. We had a light lunch of celery soup with sourdough bread. The soup was delicious & when you ate the bread the zing on your tongue was delightful. The Sunday roasts looked wonderful - no wonder they were fully booked for lunch. Just grateful they could fit us in.
Nice pub in beautiful village location. Had evening meal and breakfast in pub. Felt the food was high quality if a little cold but with prices to match - you might argue pricey. Depending on what you order can easily be looking at north of £50-60 for a couple adding just one drink each. Most mains £20+. In the morning, Breakfast muffin no butter, one rasher of bacon and one egg will set you back £6.50. Meat was good and from the adjoining high quality butcher seemingly part of same business. Stayed overnight too - room ok, adequately clean, spacious but with "bang your head" low beams if over 6 foot. Quiet overnight but a little noisy with village traffic in morning. Quieter than a town or city though. Had a couple of issues with our room, but resolved relatively quickly. Room price was good though we shopped around for this pub on various booking sites so achieved a competitive deal. Felt that service could have been slightly "smilier" throughout. I wouldn't hesitate staying again. Star rating reflects my overall experience/perceived value.
Okay 3 stars is kind of a relative score. I had expectations of the Pointer because it has had a great reputation. But we had a very run of the mill experience there. The place was chilly and the staff kept leaving the door open... Food was pretty standard, menu choice had nothing exciting to offer. Couldn't really fault it, but it wasn't anything special.
Sunday roast. Overcooked. Dry. Potatoes dry. Ordered rare fillet steak, came medium well. Sent it back. Peppercorn sauce, lumpy and strange. Friendly service and waitress tried to recover situation but ultimately only one of the three meals was decent. Second attempt at fillet much better. And swapped out the roast as well for OK dish. Unfortunately, first impressions count and we won't be back.
We had such a lovely meal and stay at the pointer. Team couldn’t be more helpful and the room was gorgeous. The food, as always, was delicious and fresh.
We stayed at The Pointer for a wedding at Notley Abbey for 2 nights. We stayed for 1 evening meal and breakfast and both were great. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms fantastic with a double basin, walk in shower and free standing bath. If we're ever planning on visiting close by we'll be sure to book again.
Perfect Sunday get together with family. Delish meal and very very good service. Crab pate was totally delish and all mains yummy. The gin trifle was superb. We will be back.
Go here often, never once had a bad meal, the food is outstanding, the staff are wonderful, and the atmosphere is perfect….
