A shop founded on such great principles and won several awards when it opened in 2012 an affordable local store where community members work shifts in exchange for a discount on groceries. Sadly it has clearly become the victim of poor supervision. Empty shelves evoke wartime rationing- lonely tins of baked beans and energy drinks where there used to be fresh fruit and veg spilling out of wooden crates. The Calthorpe Garden nearby is a great example of how a well-maintained community project can work. New management would be a great place to start. Save the people's supermarket!
Not good at all. Poor choice, overpriced and poorly maintained. Generally grubby and unloved.. Very slow service, I've frequently given up and walked out without any goods. The place always closes at least 30 minutes before the advertised time. Please don’t waste your time rushing to get there before closing time it will be shut when you get there. The staff are just lazy and shut up shop early every day. The prices on the shelf labels often don’t match the price they try to charge at the till. I have caught them out trying to overcharge on more than one occasion. The fridges are often broken. Milk often goes off well before the best by date. Update: I have stopped using this store now. There is far better nearby.
Grubby horrible shop. Overpriced and poor choice. Also frequently closes before the advertised time. Just went there at 21:45, shutters down no sign of life. Avoid if you can.
The People's Supermarket was opened May 2010, designed to enable healthy food to be supplied to an inner city urban community at affordable prices and inspired by peoples' willingness to exchange their time for other value. It was founded as a co-operaative and changed its legal status in September 2013 to a community interest company. The supermarket provides the local area of Midtown, London, with a unique combination of grocery store, production kitchen and events, such as supper clubs. It formed part of and supported the development of Lamb's Conduit Street, Holborn, which has featured the arrival of independent fashion shops and a branch of global brand J Crew. For its innovative approach to food, community involvement and local development, the venture has won several awards, including Future Minds Award for Innovation 2011 and an Observer Ethical Award 2011 The venture was supported at start-up by many organisations, including the London Borough of Camden, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Fredericks Foundation, private companies and many local people. In 2011, it was visited by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron  as a flagship of the Big Society initiative..
Every time I've been in, it's always felt a bit run down and dirty. It's also quite expensive. Appreciate the mission statement of the business, but there are simply better places to shop nearby.
This grocery store in London is a shopper's paradise! The aisles are well-organized, offering a vast selection of fresh produce, pantry staples, and specialty items. The staff is friendly and ever-willing to assist. I'm always impressed with their quality products and reasonable prices. Shopping here is a breeze, and I love supporting this excellent establishment for all my grocery needs.
Yesterday evening I been to this shop Even though they didn't have much items they have all the basic ones. The fact which amazed me was the friendly staff, they very helpful and kind with customers, to mention name I got served by person called saran, he is very informative and quick with the things. I appreciate the efforts he is putting into the work.
Always closed for some reason; can’t find updates online that it’s no longer around?
Do not go here for groceries! The milk we got was spoiled and they saw us coming as tourist and drastically increased the pricing of the food. We had 2 back packs worth of essentials after we came in from the USA and they sought to take advantage of us! The owner of the store suggested we buy things from his restaurant, but all we were looking for was some chicken to put into the stir fry that my wife was making back at our rental place around the corner. The lady at the cash register rang us up for 90 pounds, which seemed like a lot, but I was OK to pay it and get home. She forgot to ring up the precooked chicken as they didn’t have raw chicken to sell. After this was added, the bill went to 148 pounds! I’ve never paid 58 pounds for some marinated precooked chicken. It was perhaps 2 lbs worth of food. I was shocked! I told the gentleman that was too much. I asked him point blank how much the chicken was and he said 37 pounds. How does it go from 90 pounds to 148? He added 57 pounds for some chicken because he saw I was a foreigner there shopping with my 9 year old daughter. I said this is too much, but was not ready to put up a big argument. He gave me a ‘discount’ he said and it was now 136 pounds out the door. I do not recommend this location as they will take advantage of you! Instead, go to Sainsbury across the street from the Holborn tube station. They are by far the most reasonable in the area and even less expensive that’s Co-Op with a much greater selection. Never buy groceries at the People’s Supermarket. It’s unfortunate, but they cannot be trusted!
Great food shop. Solid selection of stuff, nice staff. Seems good, based on one visit.
