Visiting area and booked Sunday lunch for mother's Day ... great food, amazing Sunday lunch 10/10 well presented and tasty. Friendly staff and helpful . Good atmosphere, will definitely return when in area again .Food: 5/5
Wow Tasty & amazing atmosphere I unfortunately only had time for some chips and garlic bread but the atmosphere and staff in this establishment is amazing Very welcoming pub small very cosy and the food is fantastic and presentation is top tier Nice design interior wise feels like an old ship so much wood and EXCEPTIONALLY clean all round Will definitely have to revisit as I saw the other people’s food and it was beautiful looking and smelling FANTASTIC Highly recommend you try this it’s right next to the bus station so easy to get to and accessible for all Parking: Car park right opposite Wheelchair accessibility: Small entrance but it’s level no steps at all and pavement outside
Whilst it's not much to look at from the outside within is an absolute gem. The Old Spot is a fantastic specimen of a classic English country pub and clearly an important part of the local community with lots of regular events going on. We went for Sunday lunch and had a great meal. The food was excellent with good portions & reasonably priced. Staff were friendly & helpful even though it was busy. Whilst we didn't use it there's a lovely looking beer garden out the back which I'd gladly come back & enjoy in future.
Very warm and friendly atmosphere. I had roast dinner chicken which was moist and very flavourful. Gravy also superior to most other Sunday roast gravies. I saw a sticky toffe exit the kitchen that looked so good I'd have ordered one if I wasn't off the sweets right now!Food: 5/5
Popped in for lunch again with a friend Tues 05/03/2024 and food was mediocre. I was disappointed with my lunch of cauliflower cheese. It lacked the depth of strong cheddar and I thought it would have benefited from some/more? Dijon mustard and perhaps a pinch of nutmeg. The salad was a few leaves, some of which were squashed under the pot of cauli cheese, and a small baguette, which I suspected was a heated shop-bought half-baked one and little to eat it with so half was left because it was so boring. My friend said her beef burger with chips, salad and slaw was okay but standard fare. With so much competition from other foodie pubs, lunches should ideally be excellent ALL the time with no to little shortcuts at least ones that are so obviously apparent along with care and attention when plating. Especially important when food is only served lunchtime here. Visited today Thurs 18/01/2024 and my companion and I enjoyed delicious lunches. Starters of potato & leek soup and croquettes, mains of blade of beef and Tuscan chicken + 2 pints Uley Brewery's Pigor Mortis dark ale and 2 glasses of white Pinot Grigio, all for £61.75. It was completely frozen outside and a good warming lunch in a warm welcoming pub was wonderful! They don't add a service charge to the bill but we left a cash tip because the manager and server were excellent at their jobs and friendly and helpful. The Old Spot only serves food at lunchtime and not in the evening. Update: Popped in for a light lunch Sat 09/12/2023 and, to our relief, the food's improved again. My husband enjoyed sticky chicken wings with salad garnish and fries and I had a mug of potato and leek soup, which was delicious, and a half sandwich of cheese and pickle. Afew people eating there. Good atmosphere in the main bar with regulars enjoying a pint. UPDATE 04/2022: Sadly my review below no longer stands. The excellent chef/cook has obviously moved on and the food has returned to not only what it was before but has deteriorated. It was also quite empty so it's losing custom. The Old Spot has really upped its game with its food. It remains a nice pub with a good bar and staff but the kitchen is definitely offering a more discerning menu.
Behind the bus station and near a car park. A small drinking man's pub now a popular establishment. Noticed a good choice of gins served in a nice Copa glasses. Good outdoor space. Bar is made up of several small nooks with tables for eating.Service: 5/5
We had a family meal here with a large group and they were absolutely brilliant! The team were so helpful, the service was fast and the food was delicious. They were great with the kids too, bringing their meals out first. Thanks team.Food: 5/5
Folk music night Wednesdays are glorious. Great atmosphere, great team, great range on tap.Service: 5/5
Very friendly pub. Didn't eat but the food looked good. Beautiful outdoor space. Keg craft selection a little disappointing but my local is the Butchers Hook in Thornbury and they specialise in great craft beers.Food: 4/5
A good old town centre pub, don't be misled by the exterior, it's has a neat old-style interior. Not a large array of beers on tap but Otter Brewery at least so I was happy. A good range of dishes available without being over complicated. The fish pie was a success, the chunky chips were deemed "excellent" and the two starters were very good although the bhajis were overcooked and slightly dry. The only blot on the horizon was the soup which though thick and hot was infused with far too much wild garlic. The puds Sticky toffee and crème brulée were also of a high standard, so much so that 3 on the table of 5 next to us changed their orders! So 4/5 for food the soup and 4/5 for service because it took 45 minutes for the mains to arrive. Now while I appreciate the pub was well attended and this could cause a queue we were not once kept informed as to how long the food might be and therefore became more agitated as the time passed by. In the end I was forced to enquire when the meal was due. Apart from that the staff were friendly and helpful. With coffees it was £100 for the 4 of us. Parking seemed plentiful across from the PH and a nice walk up to and around the golf course with views across to the Severn. Sorry no photos
