About

We are a well-established, progressive general practice that has been serving northwest Bristol for over 70 years.

Story

Welcome to The Family Practice, Western College. We are a well-established, progressive general practice that has been serving northwest Bristol for over 70 years. We offer a comprehensive range of primary care services to our list size of over 12,000 registered patients.

We work as a team of dedicated professionals to provide personalised healthcare of the highest standard to our patient group, which has consequently risen in size by over 20% in the last four years. We consistently achieve high patient satisfaction on patient surveys, well above national and local averages

This work has recently been recognised by the Royal College of General Practitioners via their Quality Practice Award (QPA)

QPA is a quality assurance process undertaken by practices, which recognises a high standard of quality patient care delivered by every member of the practice team. At the time of writing, The Family Practice is one of only 18 practices in England to achieve this status twice.

Additionally, we have a strong commitment to the continued professional development of our practice members and have been a training practice for general practitioners for over 30 years.

The range of NHS services offered includes acute and chronic care, contraception, minor surgery, vaccination, screening, maternity care and child health surveillance.

Many of our patients come from overseas and our staff are fluent in many languages. Our team of doctors are able to offer consultations in German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Welsh, Catalan, Hindi and Urdu where required.

GPs themselves generally knowledgeable, personable and helpful. But the overall operation, admin etc. is frustratingly poor most of the time. 40min wait times on the phone to get an appointment, important letters sent to the wrong addresses, admin staff always 'polite' but not particularly helpful and happy to let you chase hospitals around for days trying to correct errors they've made Find them very challenging to deal with as a practice, but good GPs and nursing staff.

More of a thank you than a review. The staff at the family practice are simply brilliant. The doctors, nurses and all involved are kind, warm and reassuring. I have never had a bad experience with a single person here. I have also never had a problem getting an appointment or getting though on the phone. This is a truly 10/10 practice.

Doctors are really nice and listen and will do all they can to help or give great advise , only down fall is the reception there is 1lady who is very rude and the waiting to see the doctor in the waiting room is a long wait .

Tried ringing but held in a queue for 15 minutes, rang off and tried later, same thing couldn't get through so I drove round and they said no appointments with any go at any time in the next 3 weeks. I said I was willing to wait more than 3 weeks but they said you can't book more than 3 weeks ahead. So no appointments. No wonder A&E departments are falling over, at least you get seen there.

The problems of NHS GP Services are universal - difficulties in telephone contact - too many patients - lack of continuity with same GP - appointment waiting times etc etc. BUT, my personal experience with the Family Practice has been that when the ‘chips are down’ and it matters most; then the professionalism, care and support has been exemplary and of the highest standard.
