I went here with some family who were over from Ireland after a wedding and a heavy night of drinking. Believe me we were probably as pessimistic as they come. So we parked up, stuck her in neutral and low and behold the car starts reversing up the hill. I nearly feared i wouldn't be able to stop the car for a second. Don't hop out of the car while it's in neutral. Just a little tip from me. It was short lived as it appears to be a busy enough route given the beautiful views along the coastal drive. I would highly recommend coming here. It's probably one of the top sights to experience in the area. My brother read somewhere that it might even be a class two relic although I can't confirm this. 100% would go again, might even make it a yearly trip. Electric Brae, electric yay
Well we drove this 5 times … just to be sure as the phenomenon may not be so obvious in an automatic car. It has left lasting memories which we thank Ayrshire for. Good luck to the white BMW parked up opposite us. Happy days.
I know nothing about physics, but this is mind blowing for anyone with good grades in this area must be bewildered. Honestly if you can part safely get out and roll a ball and watch it do the opposite of what it should do.......................
It was great to experience this illusion: it's however a busy road and there are no safe places to roll the car to fully appreciate this. We parked next to the monument stone as there is a short parking place, and when there were no more cars parked next to us, put the gear in neutral and coasted. This only lasted a few seconds as there were lots of cars passing by.
Well the kids bike's rolled up the hill as did the football. I have a video of it but can't put it on here for some reason.
Really enjoyed going here, the phenomenon is so confusing but amazing. I think next to the stone, an info board would be useful to explain it better. A could way to show it is to go ‘downhill’ from the top, with engine off, in neutral and clutch on, as you actually stop moving. Go ‘uphill’ and you actually move uphill. Remember to turn the engine off, in neutral and clutch on. It’s so interesting!
Put car in neutral. Then started moving up the hill. Kids loved it. You have to find the right spot on the road. Be careful of traffic on busy days.
Fun little spot to play around with a car
These things fascinate me and I have wanted to do this for ages. Stopped on the road where we were apparently going downhill and put car in neutral....to find the car slowly rolling backwards...uphill!! Great fun! Also lovely views out across the sea to Ailsa Craig from this road
What an experience driving both ways defo worth the detour
