Story

Originally opened in 1667, as the ‘Eagle and Child’, The Eagle is one of the larger pubs in Cambridge, England, on the north side of Bene't Street in the centre of the city.[1] The site is owned by Corpus Christi College and is managed by Greene King brewery. Apart from the main bar, it sports a beer garden and the so-called RAF bar, at the rear, with graffiti of World War II airmen covering the ceiling and walls.

When the university's Cavendish Laboratory was still at its old site at nearby Free School Lane the pub was a popular lunch destination for staff working there. Thus it became the place where Francis Crick interrupted patrons' lunchtime on 28 February 1953 to announce that he and James Watson had "discovered the secret of life" after they had come up with their proposal for the structure of DNA.[2] The anecdote is related in Watson's book The Double Helix[3] and commemorated on a blue plaque next to the entrance. Today the pub serves a special ale to commemorate the discovery.

Opposite The Eagle is St Bene't's Church,[4] the oldest standing building in Cambridge, with the Saxon tower dating from around 1033

As a scientist myself, walking into the Eagle pub, knowing that Nobel Prize winning discoveries were first announced within those walls, felt like stepping directly into the bloodstream of scientific history. Every corner carried a story, every detail whispered of curiosity and courage. It is the kind of place where you can almost feel the past settling beside you at the table.nnThe food surprised me in the best way. The vegan option was genuinely delicious: the mushroom chili was rich, comforting and full of depth. The staff were lovely and very accommodating, creating an atmosphere that was warm and approachable.nnThere was also something charming about the mix of visitors. Scientists, students, tourists and locals all seemed to blend into the same gentle hum of conversation. The walls are covered in memories and signatures and yet the pub still feels alive rather than preserved. It is a place where history and everyday life meet naturally, and where a simple meal becomes part of a much larger story.nnIf you're in Cambridge, this one is an absolute must. Especially if you're a scientist or history enthusiastic.
Service and atmosphere perfectly fine, didn't have food but looked and smelled good, so why the one star? I know it's Cambridge city so prices will be hiked, sadly, but if you charge a premium for drinks, at least ensure they're not flat. A pint of Old Peculiar barely had a head to begin with, and became flat within minutes. I feel obliged to finish it because it was almost £7, but it's not enjoyable, and adds insult to injury after being fleeced.
A wonderful and vibrant spot in Cambridge where you can truly feel the city’s historical and academic vibe in a bar setting! The atmosphere is lively, with lots of decorations that add character. There’s a wide range of drinks and a good food menu, including dishes like hash duck and fish & chips. The service is very friendly, and everything is served quickly. The overall vibe is fantastic, and there are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy. I definitely recommend this place and will return whenever I am back in Cambridge!
The Eagle in Cambridge felt like stepping into history itself. The pub has such a warm, traditional charm, and knowing it’s where Watson and Crick first announced the discovery of DNA made it even more special. The wooden interiors, old beams, and RAF graffiti on the ceiling added so much character. I enjoyed the atmosphere more than anything – it’s the kind of place where you can just sit, have a drink, and soak up the stories around you.
A really lovely pic with a pretty interior and a wide range of food. The sirloin steak ciabatta was delicious and not too expensive around £11. Would definitely recommend for the selection of traditional pub meals as well as good options for lighter bites at a lower price
