Story

To walk through the door of this real find of a pub is to step back in time to the days of Victorian splendour - thick carpets, pictures on walls and ceilings and a comfy, homely atmosphere.

There has been a pub on this site since 1547 and the original Landlord, one Derrick Carver was burnt as a martyr for his religious beliefs. One of its' most famous "guests" in the past has been "Jack the Ripper" - and in The Greene Room bar, (upstairs), you can spend some time following the story of his origins and how he planned his murders from this very spot. This is also the famous pub immortalised by Graham Greene in his classic novel "Brighton Rock".

This unique pub has a charm all of its' own and attracts locals, business people and visitors from all around the World who enjoy the atmosphere of a true Victorian public house along with good beer and quality food served til late. Its central location lends itself perfectly to work parties and gatherings. Call the pub on 01273 329472 for details on private hire options, buffets and party packages.

It is the oldest pub in Brighton. I had roast lamb, it was great delicious dinner. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Cosy atmosphere.
Wonderful staff and seating, great experience overall
Great pub with a lovely atmosphere. Table service was very quick. I'd also like to give a particular thanks to Beth the barmaid for being so friendly and making sure we were all enjoying ourselves. Would definitely recommend stopping off here for a drink if you're in the lanes.
2 nights in Brighton, spent time both Friday and Saturday in the Cricketers. We’re welcomed and served by Ian and Poppy. They were both professional and very welcoming. I will return and hope to see them again. Bob
Lovely and historic place to have a beer and chat. Food was very good.
Lovely pub this we were there couple weeks back when weather was glorious sitting outside wouldn't want to sit inside as was quite dark
I must say the blonde woman with tattoos gave amazing service and was a delight to talk to, her clean venue and will definitely be coming back with my wife and family.
Nice outside. Pretty rubbish selection of cider. To be clear, fizzy fruit juice is not cider.
Love this place Make a stop off here every time we visit Brighton
