Stay away from this Restaurant!!!!. Pan cake some reddish, lettuce on the top AND it calls Crab main dish on they menu. DISASASTER!!! VISIT WAS 8PM 30th August.
First time here since it became part of a chain in 2015, it used to be the Crab at Chieveley, famed for its seafood, and originally, the Blue Boar, dating back to 1644, the English Civil War, Battle of Newbury. Oliver Cromwell stayed here and left behind a statue of a blue boar, so goes the story. Now it's part of the Epicurean Collection upmarket pub chain. Three of us family had a very enjoyable two course lunch on a cold Saturday in December. The food was delicious, great flavours and good, interesting but fairly limited menu. It isn't cheap, but it never was, we paid £35 pp for two courses and coffee, which also included one gin and tonic and a glass of cider. Staff, once we found them - lack of anyone at arrival - were professional, friendly and unobtrusively attentive once we were seated. It was barely a quarter full which surprised us being a Saturday, two weeks from Christmas, but these are strange times for hospitality and footfall is way down everywhere. The lack of attention on arrival is most probably due to the extraordinary staff shortages in the hospitality business generally, but it was noticeable. Also, the dining area was quite chilly, most diners still had their outer clothing on. The above two issues cost this place a star each from my picky scoring. We will definitely come back again, it is a great location and overall quality is pretty good. We wish them a very happy and successful Christmas and New Year 2023. Parking: Lots of space
Absolutely perfect stay. Room was clean, warm and cosy Self controlled radiators - very handy when it's-7° outside! Lovely private hot tub space, comfy bed and plenty of pillows. The toilet did have a weirdly long flush carried on for about 15 minutes! Food and drinks were absolutely gorgeous and the staff were happy to customize where required, would highly recommend. We'll definitely be going back, thank you all Vegetarian options: No vegan options marked on the menu but the staff were happy to let me customize! Parking: Plenty of parking mid week Dietary restrictions: No vegan options marked on the menu but the staff were happy to check ingredients for me and let me customize
What started off as a brief stop at the services down the road, ended up with my boyfriend and I finding this gem ten minutes down the road from Chievely services. We arrived, being offered two seats at the bar for a couple of drinks by a lovely member of staff. From the moment we walked through the door, the staff were welcoming and the pub was warming and atmospheric. Later on, having moved through the restaurant, the experience only improved; food was fantastic, with a gluten-free pie option, a gorgeous burger, and what can only be described as the most amazing side dish we have ever eaten... Creamed leak, with bacon and truffle, an absolute delight! Can't wait to return. Dietary restrictions: Great gluten-free options
Very impressed with this establishment. The staff went above and beyond to exceed my expectations, i find that rare these days. The bed room was superb, lovely modern feel to it yet retained character. We ate one night and I asked for garlic mayo to accompany my dinner, usually if a restaurant doesn’t have any it’s “sorry we don’t have any” not here, the chef knocked some up especially to my wife’s disappointment. 10:10. Will certainly return here when passing next, very impressed.
We stayed at the Crab and Boar for two nights and had the Chapel Wood which is a lovely room with a hot tub. When we arrived we was checked in by Dana who showed us to our room and helped with our luggage. We was show around our room and how everything worked. Once checked in we got changed to get into the hot tub however found out it was faulty. We informed the manager Louis who had the issue fixed within a hour he changed the pump to the hot tub by him self in a shirt and pair of trousers. The first night we ordered dinner to the room where we had the homemade chicken, ham and leek pie, this is a must try!!! The hot tub was perfect and the surroundings were so quiet. The manager Louis came to check on our stay and ensured everything was ok. Caprian, Dana and Louis were all extremely helpful throughout our stay nothing we asked was too much effort. Crab and boar is the best service I’ve received at a hotel or restaurant. Last of all the chef Richard just wow your food is amazing, from the Mac and cheese truffles, home made pie to the 600g stake, everything was cooked to perfection. Nothing we ate during our stay was over or under cooked.
What a lovely place! Staff are all, without exception, polite and welcoming. Room was lovely - really nicely furnished and designed and lovely and clean - comfy bed! Location is great for visiting Newbury with lovely walks - Snelsmore Common and Donnington Castle are recommended. Best of all, the Crab and Boar accepts dogs, which is fab. We ate in the restaurant, service and food spot on! Not the cheapest option for an overnight stay but 10/10 from me. Parking: Huge car park with plenty of space
Great pub. We stumbled across the Crab and Boar during a drive from Norfolk to Bath when we were desperately hungry and in need of a drink. The food was extremely good - we ordered the haddock, the pie, and then several starters truffle fries, leeks, pheasant, and Mac and cheese bites. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding. This was plenty of food for three people, and the haddock and pie were both gluten free this was the first time in years my coeliac mother has been able to eat battered fish. The pub itself was lovely - a real traditional English pub. I will be returning on my next trip to England - perhaps I’ll even stay there next time!
Amazing accommodation, warm welcome on arrival. Plenty of parking, also has 3 electric car charging points for free which was fantastic. Big beer garden that covers the side of the pub right around to the back. The room was great, upgraded on check in to a room with an outdoor area with jacuzzi. We were very happy with that surprise on arrival. The interior of the pub is decorated nicely. The place is in the middle of the Berkshire countryside with views across the hills. The menu is very varied and covers all tastes and requirements. They serve local sparkling, we went for the Tinwood Estate having previously stayed at that vineyard. Staff are helpful and friendly, they do their best to make your stay enjoyable. The breakfast is a combination of traditional English with brunch style options available. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay if you are in the area, close to some beautiful country walks as well.
Lovely building, starter and drinks were great, unfortunately the on line menu is not the same as the pub, and the main I had, Ox cheaks were sinewy and tasteless and the accompanying roast potatoes and veg were dry and tasteless. My partners burger was great but why they insist on serving it in a desert but I don't know.
