the Cock dates back to 1563 which is the date on the front of the building, it was an old Coaching Inn and was double the size at one time, it extended across the Boots property as well with stabling for the Coach Horses at the back

Okay a place of mixed comments I think. I enjoyed my food and it was hot when delivered. The staff serving me were considerate, professional and polite. The bar person knew regulars; their drinks and their food choice preferences which was also a sign of professionalism. The tables were clean and the bar kept spotless. However, this was lunchtime and the pub wasn't that busy. The toilets upstairs were clean but in desperate need of a lick of paint, and I would suggest a swab of the bottom 30cms of walls and skirting would pull up a plethora of microbes. The toilets are also up a narrow but steep flight of stairs so for less sure footed might find these tough. On leaving I heard a passer-by comment that it was a good pub.

The inside of this pub smells like stale urine and it is far too hot, like walking into public toilets in the middle of Summer. The customers were obviously locals, quite a few old men sat giving me funny looks for coming into the pub. The staff were welcoming and friendly however when I ordered food, I ordered a deal for £7.99, somehow I ended up paying £13.99 and was told I had made a mistake on the deal even though it was written on the menu (there were no limits or dates that the deal was limited to) food was expensive but average quality.

The bar area is clean and well looked after and the beer seems well enough kept. There are a few more interesting beers in cans behind the bar. They seem to specialise in food but are slow to clear plates from tables so when you arrive you might need to move aside the last person's plates. OK, but not a pub to rush back to.

Nice pub, good priced drinks (under £4 for a Guinness), decor is fine and apparently the food it good value.

Everyone loves the cock, I heard them cry. So I found it, took a picture of my dad standing next to the sign, win. Then puerility over, we stepped inside and had a decent crisp clean lager, before another one. And then, after some very good quality snacks left and had another giggle asking each other how much we liked the cock. But yeah good place, nice one Hitchin. And it has the amazing Amy Clark!
