The church of St Mary, Woolnoth

Story

St. Mary Woolnoth is an Anglican church in the City of London, located on the corner of Lombard Street and King William Street near Bank junction. The present building is one of the Queen Anne Churches, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. The parish church continues to be actively used for services, with Holy Communion every Tuesday.St Mary Woolnoth lies in the ward of Langbourn.HistoryEarly historyThe church's site has been used for worship for at least 2,000 years; traces of Roman and pagan religious buildings have been discovered under the foundations of the present church, along with the remains of an Anglo-Saxon wooden structure. Its name is first recorded in 1191 as Wilnotmaricherche. It is believed that the name "Woolnoth" refers to a benefactor, possibly one Wulnoth de Walebrok who is known to have lived in the area earlier in the 12th century. Its full (and unusual) dedication is to Saint Mary of the Nativity. The present building is at least the third church on the site. The Norman church survived until 1445, when it was rebuilt, with a spire added in 1485. It was badly damaged in 1666 in the Great Fire of London but was repaired by Sir Christopher Wren. Two new bells (the treble and the tenor) were cast in 1670, and in 1672 the middle bell was cast. The patched-up structure proved unsafe, however, and had to be demolished in 1711.

I love attending church here, it's close to work so I can come in during the day when I need to de-stress. The community is amazing, so welcoming. The worship is great and they're not afraid to share real biblical truths here. There's lunchtime services on Thursdays at 1pm and Sunday services at 10am.
Lovely Church! The lunch time service on Thursdays and the 10am Service on Sundays are beautiful - community is very welcoming & so are the Parish staff workers.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure

This place is absolutely fantastic, carrying the enduring legacy of John Newton with grace and charm. The people here are the epitome of warmth and love, making every visit feel like joining a family. The specialty coffee served here is simply wonderful, adding to the already delightful atmosphere. Without a doubt, it’s the best in the city!
Great little church historic little pads for your knees. A coffee shop as you enter. Very close to bank station. Beautiful details on the wall. 2 column pews and about 7 rows deep to sit and worship.
The little independent coffee shop is all I have visited here. I loved my morning beverage and the fairly friendly service from staff. Also, it was a welcome change from chain coffee shops and some of the sleeker independent ones. I only got concerned when I was served a cake that came from the open display. My advise to the staff: please be extra-careful lest you serve contaminated food. This can turn disastrous very quickly.
A delicately imposing and elegant masterpiece by Hawksmoor. Design seems to loom broodingly in graceful bulk. Church seems to remain fairly active, being open for community purposes, but the draw here is the perfection of its design. The only complaint is the incessant traffic often blocking the church from different vantages.
Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the 18th Century, this site has been used for worship one way or another for over a 1000 years. It's amazing facade is designed and built in the English Baroque style and is quite majestic. In the very early part of the 20th Century it very nearly got demolished as the Bank underground station was in the process of being built, thankfully the public outrage. This is now a Grade II listed building. Seems very lively with a very nice lady serving teas/coffees in the foyer and she was doing a brisk trade at lunchtime. This Church is obviously and pleased to see a thriving part of the local community.
Brooding, somewhat squat, but beautiful in its way. There has been a church here for 1000 years. Burial place of James Newton, who wrote a little tune called 'Amazing Grace'.
Loved it here Everyone was so friendly and is still a running church, feel very welcome hereVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
