Beautiful pub and huge garden- was really nice to sit out and enjoy the sun. I had the Sunday Roast beef which was a quite a big portion and very tasty. If I were to make one suggestion that would be to make the roast potatoes more crispy. Fish and chips were good too. Probably worth booking on a Sunday
I was very impressed with the look and feel of the pub on Sunday, I was amazed at the amount of seating area in the garden. Although I do feel it's a shame to see the children's play area removed. I did like the cozy areas to sit in, that's perfect for Adults for chatting and chilling, but not much thought has gone into the areas for children to play. Wasn't greeted with a friendly welcome. I felt like an inconvenience, I had asked if we could stop for food as we hadn't booked. The person who greeted us didn't smile and replied you should have booked its mothers day, you will have to sit in the bar area which was referred to as something else, I didn't understand what was said, to be honest I was fully aware it was mothers day and that restaurant would be fully booked, I feel a different approach to walk-ins needs to be handled a bit better. I found the food to be really expensive for what it was. I ordered the Cumberland sausages with mash and was disappointed with the gravy, too much a very watery, turned most of the mash to liquid and had no taste at all, not sure what the crumbs were on top of the sausages. My partner had fish and chips which he felt was very average and slightly overdone.
The stars are for the ambience, which is great. The inside is well done up, large and spread out, with the menus on each table tucked into an old hardback novel. The outside is also large, elegant with cosy nooks for more privacy or a family meal. However, the portions are very small and really expensive. For example: 3 cumberland sausages with mash, £14.50. A tartin about 2 inches diameter, £7.50. Taste is good; not great. The service is okay- friendly but a bit slow. So- go there for the ambience on a sunny day and with a fat wallet.
We just had a fantastic meal at the Chequers tonight. Food was delicious and plentiful! We had Roast beef adult and kids potions both plates cleaned!, burger and veg wellington roast I couldn’t finish it, there was so much! and it was all honestly amazing! Service was fantastic from all We will definitely be back and we’re bringing friends! Thanks for a lovely evening!
Although we have lived in Walton on the Hill for 2 years we have not been to the Chequers before. May I say what a most pleasant surprise my wife and I had. The ambiance, beers, and wine selection by the glass was excellent. Our food was simple but delightful, well flavoured, hot and nicely presented. A most pleasant village pub experience, consequently I booked a table for 6 in one of their chalets in the garden for the 6 Nations rugby! Russell Bracegirdle
The best Sunday Roast I’ve had for a long time. Great food, friendly staff, good beer and great location. Would highly recommend
First time visit to this pub and it was a special one. My 91 year old father was meeting his blood related family for the first time, connected via Ancestry and DNA. First off the Chequers looks beautiful, plenty of parking and big inside, with plenty of different areas and loads of character. When I had booked I asked for a quiet area so my father would hear everyone and we could all chat. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and popped us in the restaurant, which we pretty much had all to ourselves. The service was great, not to fast, as they allowed us to get to know each other. We all agreed that the food was delicious, we had main courses including liver and pie of the day plus some desserts and coffee. This pub was such a good find for us as it was roughly midway and we plan to book again and get the larger family together. Thank you for making everything run so smoothly, we will be back.
Service - excellent Drinks selection - excellent Food quality - excellent Menu choice - excellent Portion size - requires review , I feel we live in a tricky world. Food prices energy etc are so high and menus prices need to stay reasonable to get people through the door. What do you compromise on - food quality or portion size! Feels like Chequers have got this right but all the same some creativity on Portion size should be reviewed.
We went for a Sunday roast, we all had the beef. Great food, generous portions. Service was excellent. Nice to have a place with good quality food, who allow dogs and is local to us. Reasonably priced too! We will definitely be back.
Very poor level of service at 6pm in a near-empty restaurant on a Thursday. Wrong wine plonked unopened on table, poor level of attendance by waiting staff who had also very obviously not been trained into their jobs. The replacement wine, while opened, was similarly deposited on the table with no offer to pour or taste. In a subsequent, post-dinner meeting with invited guests the booking made had been "lost" as had the order for snacks and light bites, and poor table attendance again attended this event. Food served was below average.
