The Castle Winchester Great Hall

Story

Winchester Castle is a medieval building in Hampshire, England. It was founded in 1067. Only the Great Hall still stands; it houses a museum of the history of Winchester.HistoryEarly historyThe castle was built in 1067 and for over one hundred years it was the seat of Government of the Norman Kings. A round tower from the original castle complete with sally ports is still visible. In 1141, during The Anarchy, forces of the Empress Matilda were besieged by the forces of King Stephen at the castle.Building the Great HallBetween 1222 and 1235, Henry III, who was born at Winchester Castle, added the Great Hall, built to a "double cube" design, measuring 110 ft by 55 ft by 55 ft (approx. 33.5m by 16.8m by 16.8m). The Great Hall was built of flint with stone dressings; originally it had lower walls and a roof with dormer windows. In their place were added the tall two-light windows with early plate tracery. Extensions to the castle were added by Edward II. The Great Hall is a Grade I listed building. Behind the Great Hall a medieval garden called Queen Eleanor's Garden was formed. An imitation Arthurian Round Table was hung in the Great Hall. The table was originally constructed in the 13th century, and repainted in its present form for Henry VIII; around the edge of the table were painted the names of King Arthur's knights. A series of pictorial epigrams illuminated in medieval monastic style known as the Winchester Panels were also hung in the Great Hall. They are thought to depict the 25 knights of the Round Table and illustrate the challenges facing a maturing character as it progresses round the great "Wheel of Life".

The Great Hall is one of the historical landmarks to visit in Winchester, England. The most interesting is to see the iconic Round Table. Also, there is a small shop to buy souvenirs. You can include The Great Hall in your bucket list if you will visit Winchester.
A splendid piece of ancient history King Arthur's Round table housed in the Great Hall. Sadly only a shadow of its former glory the majestic days of Winchester Castle are long gone. But what remains is surely one of Winchester's many great treasures. Thanks to the helpful and friendly staff. For helping to make the visit a most memorable experience.
Surprisingly good - more than I expected by quite a lot. It's basically only the one room, with a little exhibition to one side and a small garden, but it's very much impressive. The round table is of course very cool, but the stained glass is all at visible level and great to look at, plus there's the wedding gates which are incredibly detailed, the stunning statue of Queen Victoria, the brass of the late Queen, and lots of information boards about the history of the place. The price is now £8pp and includes the Westgate Museum which is small but interesting - you can't get in for £4 anymore. We went assuming it would be £4 but in the end were glad we payed to look around properly. The little exhibition isn't bad either, although it's mainly just pictures and things to read on walls in a corridor.
A hidden gem in Winchester well maintained and amazing to see the hand craftsmanship in this iconic building. Recommend see your self with a lovely secret garden to the rear this old court house situated right next to the new courthouse in Winchester was a highlight to the day. The gift shop was filled with great trinkets and other well stocked gifts.
The hall is in magnificent condition given its history. It would have made for a glorious courtroom, but today is a mostly empty space. The halls history is presented down the length of the long gallery on your way to the gift shop and exit. It's worth taking you time to browse its length.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Spent a very pleasant morning exploring The Great Hall, Westgate Museum and the City Museum on a Winchester Explorer Ticket, which allowed entrance to all 3 attractions. Lots of information in the Great Hall and, of course, King Arthur's Round Table hung on the wall. I think it took us around 1.5 hours to visit the 3 attractions but tickets were very good value and even got 10% off an annual ticket when ordered online. Would recommend.
This is an incredible historical building. Inside, there's the famous Round Table linked to King Arthur's legends, which is pretty impressive. The size of it seeing it hanging up on the wall is astounding. It really brings the legends to life when you see it in front of you. It's like stepping into a history book but cooler. You can almost hear stories of kings and important stuff that happened here. The stained glass with the names of the kings is amazing. The painted wall with names of those in parliament is awe inspiring. I also loved seeing the gates which were specially made for Diana's wedding with their initials carved on the top. If history's your thing, it's a gold mine. But even if history doesn't sound interesting to you, the Great Hall is stunning. The architecture is a mix of strength and elegance that's just beautiful. It's definitely worth the entry fee. Visiting here isn't just a regular visit to a museum. It's like getting a real feel for England's past. It's a chance to see, learn, and appreciate how amazing this country's history is.
A great place to visit if you are in the town. £4 to get in and have a look. Walk through the well priced gift shop to see the hall. It’s beautiful, especially the most amazing large steel doors at the end! See the king Arthur’s knights table. Walk into the beautiful small garden at the side. Doesn’t take long to see it and then you can walk out through the corridor which displays all the historical information. A great quick thing to do that won’t bore the kids.
Fascinating hall with a small garden housing king Arthur's round table. Would suggest you get a joint ticket along with the other museums as not much else to see, but worth a visit
Very beautiful building with an interesting history. Pretty garden attached, which was lovely to sit in, in the sun. As a disabled person I was pleased to find it fully accessible. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful, they really made my visit a pleasure. Particular mention to the lady that greeted me at opening time on Tuesday 20/8/24. Thankyou so much for your assistance. Definitely recommend visiting. Lady Kay-Elizabeth
