Excellent meat and deli. Quality and price great. Service is very pleasant.
Have been coming here since it opened - the steaks vary between above average to absolutely outstanding. Always get friendly service, with excellent advice on preparation, especially for some of the cuts I am less familiar with. The other deli items are often a nice surprise, good quality and again, often not the things I would have considered buying as you'll never see them in a Tesco.
As I am visiting the region I was looking forward to the legendary taste of a good Angus beef steak. When I entered the shop I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer selection of produce, wine and beer. I thought it’d be a good foresight of the meat quality. I went for the ribeye. I politely asked the butcher whether or not the steak was Angus beef and whether or not it was dry aged. He answered quite boorishly, but that can happen in the heat of the moment. No judgment there. Off I went with two prime cuts of dry aged Angus ribeye. Or so I thought. I am far from the kind of person to write bad reviews, but the quality of the steak I bought is one of the worst I’ve ever experienced from an actual butcher. After dry-brining the meat, it quickly became apparent that the meat still contained a lot of moisture dry aged? and that the cuts weren’t of consistent thickness. I’ll spare you of all other frustrations, but in the end all I got was a ridiculously thin steak full that was almost impossible to get right. I got most of it medium rare, but even then the taste was just bland. More than half of it was cartilage and membrane, rather than fatty marble as I’d expect. The 1 inch steak I bought ended up about under a quarter inch thick on the plate.
I have many times in the past bought meat from here but my last experience has put me off ever going back. I bought diced steak as well as a couple of beef briskets at the start of the month with just over a week's use by on them. When I came to open them 3 days before the stated use by date all were green and rancid. I wrote to the company immediately after and received an auto-generated message that they would respond to me "soon". It has now been a few weeks and I have still heard nothing thus the review. Not a cheap place for produce but normally well worth it, it is a shame in this case they dropped the ball with checking stock freshness or with dating and they didn't see fit to take responsibility.
Loved the quotes on the wall outside as we parked. Found some interesting gin and good SA wines as well as boerewors! Meat seems a tad pricey for my student pocket but I certainly will go back for select or specialised meat choices and some of the other food choices available. Would definitely recommend a visit. 4 stars due to price but if that is not an issue for you then give it five!
*definitely* the best butcher in the area. Worth making the trip out to, even though they are a wee bit out of town. There are many butcher's around, but none hold a candle to here. The may is very fresh, and tastes unbelievable when cooked a personal favourite are their Mexican burgers, or sirloin steaks, but all their meat is fantastic. Their prices are fantastically low for what you get too. The staff are friendly and very helpful, and you get a free freshly baked loaf if you pay more than a fiver too! They also have a range of alcohol in, from local breweries, and other bits and bobs too. If nothing else, the place is ideal for barbeque supplies in summer.
Social distancing: Their app which I use to minimize contact works great, doesn't even force you to create an account. You can order with a guest account. I didn't find a sanitising station on the entrance, but not a major problem since the store looks clean and all products are packed or properly covered behind the counter. Service: Quick and friendly. They immediately know which order was mine. Perfectly packed with lovely extra white puddings seriously good. Everything came fresh other than 1 frozen pudding. And they made sure to point it out which I appreciate. Menu: Their Weekender pack is a very good bargain. Their black pudding and Lorne tastes clean and not too salty nor fatty. Their lamb doesn't smell as much, unlike most lambs I've tried. The Spanish-style sausage is not a chorizo alternative, but is flavourful enough with just the right amount of Manchego. Great T-bone steaks. Too bad their app only provides limited options as they do have much more to offer in-store. But it's more than enough to prep you up for another lockdown.
Very Confusing, strange Service Experience. Popped into this shop recently, thinking I would get some ham and eggs on the way home. I walked in to a greeting from the young female staff there, who asked me what I wanted. I said I just wanted some sliced ham and eggs. Lady informed me that they didn't have any cold food. She then remembered that they had eggs right there in front of me. I looked at the meat section and they had some breakfast foods like bacon and lorne etc packaged up so I bought some bacon to compensate the lack of ham same thing really. AFTER paying, the lassie then remembered they had cold meats like salami etc in a fridge in the back... then grabbed that and paid for what I came there for... What is this place? Is it not a BUTCHER? Tried to make some small talk with the said staff, I was the only person in the shop. She seemed quite cold and didn't seem to be listening. I honestly don't know. Kinda wish I went down the road and round the corner to another butcher but thought this place would do.
The best butcher in Dundee. An amazing range of top quality meats. Always willing to help and give advice. Not only that but the choice of their beers, wines, pickles etc is just as good.
Found this place a couple of days ago. One of my very favourite places, food and drinks are great. The service is fantastic. Screaming chimp sausages and caramelised onion sausages are great.
