I attended the Bull Inn at lunchtime today for a meeting and was blown away by the great atmosphere, welcoming service, and i tried a couple of the small plate snacks. Absolutely brilliant, I highly recommend it! I was lucky enough to be able to go and take a look at a couple of the bedrooms I had tried to book to stay here originally but it was fully booked so it was great to view the rooms for future reference. They're stylishly decorated, with a classy elegance of its history. Beautiful and classic.nI would love to go back and dine here for a full meal, the menu looked amazing!
We visited a couple of Fridays ago, expecting a Riverford-style celebration of local produce and a warm, welcoming dining experience. Unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver.nnThe service felt awkward rather than friendly. We had to ask how the sharing plates worked and weren't given any introduction to the menu, specials, or the provenance of the food, which felt like a missed opportunity given the restaurant's ethos.nnSome dishes were very good, the asparagus and roast potatoes were excellent, but others were less impressive. The artichoke was tough, and the trout salad was underwhelming. For four small plates, a Bloody Mary, and a beer, the bill came to around £80.nnA week earlier we'd spent only slightly more at a tapas restaurant in Exeter, enjoyed far more food, excellent service, and a much more memorable experience. The Bull's ingredients were clearly good, but the overall experience felt overpriced and lacking warmth. I've since spoken to a couple of friends who had similar experiences with the service and value for money.nnSadly, it's not somewhere I'd return to, a real missed opportunity.
We really enjoyed the Trout Salad and the whole Plaice as we opted for the 'smaller plates'. Really good value. They were ample for us, with a side of fried potatoes and aioli. My cider was absolutely delicious and lovely and cold! We will definitely return.
I ate at The Bull with my lovely wife on Saturday evening. It was an excellent choice. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodated my nut allergy with knowledge and flexibility which is not always the case.nnThe food was superb. From the focaccia to the pork rillettes to my main course of roasted squash and lentils, all of it cooked with intelligence and love. The squash dish is genuinely one of best vegetarian plates I've ever tasted. I'll be dreaming of it for weeks.nnIt's not cheap but nowhere is cheap and if I'm going to spend decent amounts of money then I'd rather it was in quality, local, organic produce than on a menu sourced without care or scruples.nnIf you're a fan of MEAT then please don't eat at The Bull. I've read many reviews from angry carnivores complaining that the food is insufficiently fleshy. The world doesn't need more bile at the moment so I suggest going for a burger or a steak in one of Totnes' many other excellent dining options.nnBut if you're of a reasonable disposition and enjoy intelligent, ethical and expert cooking then you'll find your new favourite restaurant at The Bull.
Had dinner with 3 friends here. Make sure to book as we weren’t successful in getting a table on spec the night before. Really loved the interior, menu, drinks and approach to sustainability. Most of staff super lovely and helpful. We shared a mix of small and large plates - all delicious.
