Very disappointed in this tescos, as a tesco colleague the last thing id expect is for someone from another store to racially profile my partner and her mother, to watch them over shoulder every second and accuse them of stealing when theyve already checked whats been scanned numerous times and then to check their receipts and say they didnt pay for everything all because my colleague discount was applied, then after accuse them of something that we arent even supposed to be doing. Absolutely appalling considering ive already had issues at this store myself. This was the last thing i expected from a store this high traffic.
Some of the staff and management in this store are racist and profile customers. Other reviews here that discuss being profiled or falsely accused are accurate.nnUpon entering the store, my partner and I immediately received an unwelcoming reception from a female member of staff who followed us to the customer service desk at the front of the store.nnAnother male staff member was already serving a customer, so we joined the queue. We were the only ones waiting. The woman who followed us then went behind the till but made no attempt to serve us. Instead, she stood there giving accusatory looks in our direction and did nothing else. It was clear she did not want to serve us.nnThe male server was pleasant and had no issue refunding money to my debit card for my father’s missed Clubcard points, even though the original purchase was made on a different card. This was his suggestion, not our request.nnI then asked to purchase a scratchcard and was asked for ID under the Think 25 policy. I provided my ID without complaint and even joked with the server, as I am over 30. I was then told my partner would also need ID. Unfortunately, my partner did not have any, as they are from abroad and we were visiting my family together.nnWhile I fully understand and respect the Think 25 policy and accepted that the purchase could not go ahead, it quickly became clear the policy was not being applied consistently. We were told that if one person at the desk looks under 25, all customers present must provide ID and that this applies to everyone. This is clearly untrue, as I had visited the same desk with my father days earlier for a similar transaction and this had not been required. We also witnessed another exchange similar to ours happen in the store, and they did not ask the second person for ID after asking the first.nnWhen I calmly explained this, the woman with the bobbed hair rolled her eyes and continued giving us aggressive looks. I therefore requested to speak to the manager.nnThe manager was rude and unhelpful, repeating the same script and even telling us to speak to a police officer if we didn’t “like it.” I then asked whether I would be served on a future visit if I came alone with ID which I had already provided. The same woman then said, “we wouldn’t serve you, because we know who you are now,” despite the fact she had already refused to serve us and should not have been involved in the exchange.nnWe are 33 and 30 years old, not underage teenagers, and are both teachers.nnAfter leaving the desk to continue shopping, security began following us around the store aisle by aisle. It was obvious they had been instructed to do so.nnWe were shopping on behalf of my father. When I phoned him to explain what had happened, he came to the store to speak to the manager about both the incident and the security following us. The female manager refused to come down and sent a male manager instead, despite staff initially saying she would attend.nnWe explained that while we accept Think 25, the behaviour we experienced amounted to profiling and discriminatory enforcement. The comment about refusing future service was completely inappropriate, especially as I had provided valid ID and caused no disruption. The male manager then suggested that some customers buy items for gangs outside the store, implying this could apply to us. This was absurd, given he was speaking to two adults in their 30s and a parent.nnLudlow is a predominantly white town, and my partner is not. I strongly believe racial prejudice, combined with assumptions about our age, influenced how we were treated. It just felt like they made assumptions about our character without even knowing us…nnWe raised this with head office, who were equally unhelpful. Posting here so others are aware. We have not returned since. This experience happened some time ago now but upon recently hearing someone else we know they are 43 and a woman have a similar unpleasant experience, we wanted to finally share our story here.
