Tai Calon Community Housing has more than 6,000 homes and we are the largest social housing landlord in the Blaenau Gwent County Borough.
We were created in July, 2010, after tenants of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council voted in favour of their homes being transferred to a “not for profit” organisation.
During our first five years we spent upwards of £96 million bringing homes up to Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS). This involved replacing kitchens, bathrooms and roofs as well as updating electrical wiring and heating systems. The standard is set by Welsh Government and was achieved on time and under the £111 million budget.
In April, 2016, we start a new five year programme. We are replacing all the windows in our homes as well as keeping them up to WHQS. We expect to spend around £15 million a year on repairs and maintenance.
We try to keep as much of the money we generates within Blaenau Gwent - creating employment as well as work placements, and, where possible, supporting local suppliers/contractors.
We also help tenants in many different ways - from supporting communities to tackling fuel poverty, offering advice on debt management and providing training opportunities.
