What an amazing pub. The service was really quick and the food was delicious, excellent value for money. On top of that the staff couldn’t have been any more friendly and made our group feel at home. The pub has a cosy and charming feel. Will definitely be back and highly recommend to others. Even looking to stay at the hotel there as I’ve heard great things.
Went for Sunday lunch. Service very slow and they were not too busy. Waited 40minutes for starter of mussels in wine and garlic sauce. Never thought it was possible to have dry mussels!!!! Main course of roast sirloin and all the trimmings and a side of cauliflower cheese. The side order turned up just before I finished off the two thin slices of overcooked sirloin looked like rashers of bacon and very little taste . The roast potatoes were deep fried and the oil they were cooked in tasted bitter and burnt….. Time for an oil change. The mash potatoes tasted like a well known brand of instant “smash” disguised with a hint of thyme. The single sprig of broccoli was passable as was the three slices of carrot. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and had the flavour of, I can only say, paper. Good thing they enthused about the lashings of rich gravy. Bitterly disappointed
First evening meal here for a while. The car park was almost full when we arrived and there was a really good atmosphere inside. It was warm, although the large open fire was not lit. There were families here and in previous occasions I have seen will behaved dogs in the bar area it's so lovely to find a pet friendly pub. There seemed to be a lack of staff, as we had to wait for bar staff to appear behind the bar in between serving at tables. There were people waiting to be served all round the bar. The meal we wanted was unavailable due to not having the main ingredients, which was a shame. Over the years, this has been a very hit and miss pub to go to. Hopefully it's just a New Year blip. Update Feb 2023 Visited again for a meeting in a room just off the main bar. The bar was well staffed and our meal was delivered promptly. Much better service tonight.
Really nice experience in a hotel in Thaxted, England. We come over to visit our friends and was told to use this place to visit and stop in and must say was very good from start to finish. We found it to be very clean with tables at base to top being very good which is my first impressions. You can see they must be a very popular with there close resident in town but always made us feel extremely welcome as we are from Black forest region and not speak to much English but good to speak it. on arrival we had spoken to Ron who is in charge and helped us with what was around the local area, lots of useful information, we enjoyed here so much we sat out side with our friends until late time and had one too many glasses of Wine, our fault but we enjoyed our visit a lot here and was made to feel very good with our friends. Amelia is a very smiley lady along with the rest of there staff very good customer service. We will be back. Thank you
Greene King owned pub in a quaint village. Stopped by for a drink after a walk nearby. Nice place to rehydrate! Although I didn't get any food, there were plenty of people who had and very good it looked too!
Another very good find. Despite the bath plug not working in one room and the other being decorated the food more than makes up for it. The chef genuinely deserves heaps of praise. Well done. I'm rarely surprised.
I have been visiting here, once or twice a year, for some time. It is very good value for money. The rooms are clean and the breakfasts are good. The town and surrounding area is interesting and is convenient for other sites of interest and Stansted airport. There’s lots to do.
We happened to be outside at lunchtime, whilst looking around thaxted, so went in and were very pleased we did. The interior is pleasant and the service couldn't be faulted. My wife was very pleased with her steak and salad, but the fishcakes I had were a delight. Real pieces of salmon in the cakes on a bed of mushrooms and spinach with a super salad Yum
On first impressions it was positive. We ordered a starter and main dish each for 3 people. The starters arrived quickly. This is where the positive ends. After waiting an hour after our starters and seeing other diners get all their courses before us we managed to get the attention of a member if staff. They checked with the kitchen and that ours would be 5 minutes. They never offered an explanation except the chef was really busy. This was a quiet Thursday! Eventually two out of the three mains turned up. One was ok. When the 3rd arrived the lasagne was burnt. We asked on leaving why it took longer than everyone else, same reply and no apology or offer of discount. Service was bad. I would not go here again.
Went in for a meal Saturday evening and both ordered the slow cooked lamb shoulder which took over 45 mins to arrive the plates were cold as was the food, The lamb if cooked for 8 hrs as the menu says should fall of the bone but it was a bit tough and the mash seemed to have some kind of skin on it. The final straw was the gravy was so thick it wouldn't pour out of the tiny jugs that it was in .Overall very very dissapointing
