About

SurreySave is a new not-for-profit community bank for everyone in Surrey and Kingston. Locally delivered and ethically focused, we offer excellent value loans and savings for all who live or work in Surrey or Kingston.

Story

SurreySave Credit Union is a not-for-profit community bank offering professional financial services for all who live or work in Surrey or Kingston.

SurreySave was started by a group of volunteers from Guildford, Mole Valley, Woking and Waverley, who spent many years raising local support and finance to set up Surrey’s very own credit union. Most of our support came from local borough councils, housing associations, charities and Legal & General.

Credit unions are popular in the Americas, Australasia and Ireland, but relatively new to Britain where their role was carried out traditionally by local building societies. When these were taken over by mainstream banks, British people lost access to community-owned and run financial services. But over the last decade, membership of the UK’s 500 credit unions has tripled – and their savings and loans have quadrupled.

Credit unions are owned and controlled by their members. Profits are used to grow the business, or passed back to members as interest or dividends.

We exist to help our members help themselves, encouraging them to develop sensible financial habits and understand the true cost of credit. Whenever possible, we assist those who struggle to make ends meet, helping them up the ladder to financial health.

Mission

To be the first choice for low cost, high quality ethical financial services serving all who live or work in Surrey and Kingston.

My elderly mother likes to do the right thing in life...but is also a rather successful shrewd investor. Not being one to do things online she's asked me to post this review as she was bowled over by the "young chap" at the office. "One generally only backs winning horses, normally I get a better return elsewhere but the chap in the office was so nice I decided to invest anyway. When he went on holiday a nice lady from the North finished off opening my account...to my surprise she was the CEO, I find it reassuring the people at the top can do work!"

From one of our members! I first met Valerie, CEO approximately a year ago, at a work shop put on at the Celtic Manor to link and facilitate engagement between business managers and credit unions. Valerie was spokesperson for my table and expressed in her presentation that she was new to the credit union movement. However, as true as that was, Valerie represented my table in explaining to the business managers present what credit unions were, where they were at currently and their future ambitions. She did this with such confidence that you could have been mistaken that the credit union world had been her world for many years. Valerie is a breath of fresh air to the movement - she is engaging, exudes unashamed confidence, genuineness, energy, excitement, knowledge and professionalism. I know that she is doing some great work at Surrey Save. I have been involved with the credit union world for the past 15 years and am a founder member of a fast growing, engaging, evolving and innovative credit union and look forward to working with and sharing thoughts and ideas with Valerie! Anyone working with Valerie will tap into her warmth, professionalism and frankness - she has a tremendous accolade of skills to offer - watch out Surrey!"

As a saver with Surrey Save I've been very happy with their services, the account opening process was smooth and the chap I spoke to was kind and helpful. I would be happy to recommend them. Rob

I am very much in favour of credit unions and my husband and I both invest with SurreySave however we are finding it difficult to get a response to requests for information and promises of calling back or sending documents have not been realised. I think a visit to the branch is probably the answer but we live quite a distance away and I would like to see communication improve with the Union. Frustrated of Farnham Elizabeth Lane
