Strode's College

Story

Strode's College is a sixth form college located in Egham, Surrey. Its history began in 1704 when Henry Strode bequeathed £6,000 to set up a free school in his native parish of Egham. In the twentieth century Strode's became a boys' grammar school before being designated a sixth form college in 1975. At present it has a roll of 1100 students aged 16 to 18. It achieved an overall pass rate of 98% at A Level and 100% success in 28 A Level subjects, with over a third of its A Level students achieving either one or more A* or A grades. The college also provides a wide range of day and evening Adult Education courses. In September 2016, the College announced its intention to merge with East Berkshire College in February 2017. Alumni of the college are sometimes referred to as Old Strodians.HistoryThe college traces its origins to the free school founded by Henry Strode and co-workers Timothy Windsor and Ben Jackson. This School and the Almshouses were built on the same site in Egham in 1706. The original buildings were pulled down. Of their replacements, built in 1828, two ranges of almshouses remain. Listed as historic buildings, they are still in use by the college. The present main college building dates from 1915. The school has been known previously as Strode's School and as Strode's Grammar School from 1919 until 1975, when it became Strode's College. The Worshipful Company of CoopersFrom the time of its foundation the Coopers' Company was the Trustee of Henry Strode's Charity which administered the School but in 1912 the Charity Commissioners drafted a new Scheme which gave the School its own Board of Governors, changed it from an elementary to a secondary school and brought it into the Surrey education system. Under further changes introduced following the 1944 Education Act, the School was granted Voluntary Controlled status as a Boys' Grammar School and the composition of its Governing Body set to include four Foundation Trustees, one of whom, at least, was to be a representative of the Company.

This college is so lapse it is unbelievable. At present my 2nd child is doing their A levels. Both are typical boys and need motivation. Teachers are always sick or can't make lessons. Or even state trains aren't running. I go 2 work on the train and if they are not running get in by other means There are other means of transport! Sorry but they have more time off than any other occupation and especially this year my youngest has had at least a third of his lessons cancelled telling them to do some work online. May work 4 the very studious types but not mine. When teachers go off sick or extend their weekend they have no facility for a stand in teacher. Told last week one of his a level teachers is going long term sick and my sons lessons have been cancelled 4 at least 1 1/2 weeks. Not acceptable. I was at this college 30 years ago and don't remember a lesson being cancelled and teachers led by example and really cared. Certainly doesn't seem 2 be the case now. So so disappointed Strodes college.
honestly really good comparing to previous schools i’ve been to. teachers are easy to communicate with, and any problems that happen are quicklynsorted out by the student services team, i’d highly recommend going here as opposed to other colleges in the surrounding area seeing how quick they are to deal with issues that occur with students, and their support too
I went to this college from 2021-2023. They were pretty good right up until near the end, where an incident happened and police were involved. Me and another girl were both victims in this and the police made the college aware about it and that me and the person who did the incident should not be allowed in the same classes together as he was a danger to me. They handled the situation in a bit of the wrong way I feel and I was then forced to drop one of my two subjects nearing to the end. Slightly made me feel like I was being punished for going through something pretty bad.nnHowever, the actual college it’s self is pretty decent and they have very good teachers, especially Rebecca in Criminology! The safeguarding team are also excellent and were always there if you needed a chat or anything. They also offer an in college counsellor for those who are struggling. The counsellor is wonderful and very helpful too.
I think I came to this college at the time where they were in their transition period. No focus or energy given to our year. Admissions team had horrible communication. Absolute joke of diversifying the college - weren’t even able to put on a proper cultural day - the teacher in charge didn’t let a lot of the plans that the study body wanted come to life because it would not fall in like with his eyes of diversity. He only wanted to spend college money on rabbit bunnies and other farm animal. Ian Colley the maths teacher was unhelpful towards students and made the feel like they couldn’t ask for help
Not much place for diversity, which gives an impression of racism on the part of the students, and my daughter can not cope with it. In her classes, she is the only black student and always works alone even when she has to work in a group, the other students do not integrate her. it's a shame that in the 21st century, we can still have this kind of behaviour towards minorities.nHowever, her teachers are nice.
