A National Trust property; an old house with extensive gardens. The car park is free for members, but otherwise requires payment. Access within the House is a bit limited; the upper floor is private. In addition, on the day that I visited, there was some conservation work underway, and the servants quarters are closed. Unfortunately, this one might not be suitable for those with limited mobility. They do provide some mobility scooters, and there is a free shuttle service, but access to the house is up a flight of steps with no ramp. The grounds can be accessed separately to the house, although NT membership covers both. I would highly recommend a walk around the lake to see the various garden rooms and places of interest. Dogs are welcome, and the paths are well made and clearly laid out. There are numerous pieces of furniture, paintings and small items that were gifted along with the property. There are even some paintings by well known artists. The entrance, shop and restaurant are modern and we had quite an enjoyable stop for tea and cake. All in all, we had a splendid day, and enjoyed our time; I would have liked to have had a little more to explore the gardens in more depth.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Stourhead today. It is a truly beautiful National Trust property with extensive grounds that amaze at every turn.. it has some beautiful features in the gardens and lots of fun caves and tunnels and bridges for all ages to enjoy. The house is stunning.. beautifully preserved with lots of history and great story telling from the kind and informative volunteers who clearly love the place. Entry and parking is free for National Trust members and there is an extensive carpark with step free access.. it’s a large site but mostly flat albeit with one or two slopes or optional stepped areas to negotiate. There is a lovely cafe and pub on site and outside seating areas for picnics and a lovely Gallery and second hand bookshop doing great business. It was busy but didn’t feel crowded apart from small queues at the two popular ice cream outlets! There are activities to complete for the kids and plenty of benches for less able. You can easily while away a good few hours there so set aside a day and bring the whole family. A truly lovely NT property.
We had a fantastic stroll through the gardens late autumn. The colours were wonderful. Staff were setting up for Christmas, so lots of activity and prep going on which added to the atmosphere of anticipation for the festive season. We had coffee and cake and soaked up the beauty of the historic buildings. We even bought a few Christmas presents. A wonderful day.
Just a totally magical place! The parkland around the lake is stunning. The "classic" time to see it is Autumn due to the colours of the trees but to be honest I am sure it looks great at any time of year. The walk round the lake takes maybe 60-90 minutes and is not very difficult, gravel paths all the way. There are other longer walks that I have not tried. The house is perhaps less of a draw than the grounds, but is worth a look at least once, especially the library. The Christmas illuminations were also very enjoyable last year, even in the rain.
A beautiful national trust area of outstanding beauty. The gardens lakes and buildings were a delight to walk around and enjoy. There was also the kitchen gardens and main Manor house which was located at the side of the grounds. In the middle of the area there is a pub/resturant with rooms to rent and courtyard to sit and dine in. While we were there the local church were selling drinks, cakes and sandwiches which were much cheaper and the money went to charity. There is a also an art gallery, second hand book shop, gift shop, cafe and garden shop. The lady in the book shop was delightful and helped us arrange a lift in the land bus her husband up to the house. What a gorgeous couple. So kind, friendly and helpful. The grounds were absolutely amazing and well worth a visit. see photos parking is £4 for the day, entrance to the house and grounds was £18 per adult. Dogs are allowed in grounds on leads not in house toilets available near entrance and pub. Top tip. Take a picnic and your camera.
Such an amazing place the house was full of character and showed a real insight into the families life and interests. After the house you visit the gardens and the lake.....wow. I wish I'd taken a book to read down by the water. It is truly beautiful , I will definitely be coming back. Stunning.
For both National Trust members or non members this place is a must visit. It has the perfect size for a healthy walk. It's fantastic to bring your own food and do some picnic but there is also an Inn with a pub between the entrance and the gardens. One of the best gardens I have visited! Incredible views around every corner. Various route for different abilities of walking around the Garden. Very special place. House is really nice and worth a visit before or after the garden.
One of my favourite National Trust properties, the house has a lot of impressive paintings. The gardens are even more impressive though. A lovely place to have a walk around. Allow 2 hours or more. Cafe / restaurant is good too.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fantastic place all year round, families and dog friendly. Ideal for: Everyone looking for seasonal outdoor garden and woodland. Key Info: Plenty of parking available, £4 none members for the parking spot, and you need cash or Ringo. Better to join National Trust. Pros: - Toilets are available. - Coffee shops. - Restaurant. - Lovely walks and even a pub. - Ice cream during summer. Cons: - No toilet is available once you are inside the garden, so better to use before you go in.
