This is such a beautiful house, gardens and surroundings. We made it late so we didn't have sufficient time to explore it in much detail but the time we spent we thoroughly enjoyed it. The house due to its 50 anniversary with National Trust has decorations from designs from the 70s, what made it colourful and cheerful, the gardens very pretty, the staff, helpful and welcoming. And in June we enjoyed viewing 100 amazing sculptures from Surrey artists. It was a treat and highly recommended.
Standen was given to the National Trust in 1972. Standen is known for its Arts & Crafts house and collection, decorated with beautiful Morris & Co. wallpapers and textiles of life in 70s. There are some activity rooms there which kids will definitely enjoy. Some other activities can be found in the field in front of the house. There are gift shop and cafe with hot and cold drinks and variety of snacks, cakes and sandwiches available on the side. Development of the garden has happen before building of the house. There are lots of deck chairs around the house you can use to sit and enjoy the surroundings. At the time of our visit we have also enjoyed listening to live music which injected even more life into the place.
A stunning property and well worth a visit! There are plenty of rooms to see inside the house, and with plenty of examples of 'arts and crafts' wallpapers, soft-furnishings etc Come the summer the gardens will be stunning too. The roadway down to the car-park is rather potholed! Lovely, friendly and helpful staff.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A lovely day out House was interesting to walk around. The gardens were closed but will look great once everything dries out. The new walks will be fabulous once the planting establishes itself. The cafe was a little disappointing but this is due to a limited menu following the pandemic. By the end of spring or early summer, this place is going to be fantastic and I am looking forward to returning later this year.
Not all the rooms are open in the winter as they take the opportunity to do deep cleaning. But we had a guided tour instead of free flow which was very interesting. Some of the walks are also closed due to the very wet ground and some fallen trees, but that was not a problem as still plenty of places to walk. The cafe is nice with a reasonable amount of seating.
Property has parking for the disabled.....everybody else, we use the main car park and walk up to the property. No parking fees that applyNT members wouldn't pay anyway normally. Toilets are accessible for all. Lovely property look around over 2 floors and plenty of rooms to wander round. Once done there is the garden to look around and from certain areas you can see the reservoir. There are various picnic areas and there is a cafe too as well as a shop. We visited for the Xmas decorations and was nice. Totally recommend.
Really enjoyed visit, good size, not too big . House was furnished as it was left early 19th century with memorials around the house of the 1970's when the house was given to the National Trust. Also a little crouched mouse to be found in most rooms. Gardens lovely and at the moment a sculpture exposition in and around gardens it would be good if they did a permanent Tea house in converted barn right next to house very Nice . A little plant shop , second hand bookshop and little shop. Very friendly staff happy to talk about the house and the family that lived there.
A lovely homely family arts and crafts house. The rooms were cosy and delightful, and set up for a 1920s family weekend. The dining room was especially appealing! We visited during the 1970s exhibition so it was interesting to see the 1970s games, books, toys, and fabrics placed in various rooms. Great to try on the 70s clothes and wigs! Also, loved the William Morris wallpaper and it was good fun to try tracing out some of his designs too! Interesting second hand bookshop as well as the National Trust shop plus a refreshing cuppa in the barn cafe. Lovely grounds and gardens to stroll around, too. Very enjoyable visit. We would thoroughly recommend it.
I love the arts and crafts movement and this house has it all. Everything from the light fittings to the wallpaper, bedspread, ceramics. Then to top it all off a magical garden filled with fabulous plants and super helpful and interesting volunteers and staff. The vegetable patch with its fabulous fruit trees is a wonder! Definitely worth several visits!!!
A lovely interesting National Trust property with a lovely house and amazing gardens. This is a NT property so if you plan to visit more than two NT properties in a year it’s best to buy an annual membership. On Sundays during July - August there is a live band on the terrace. During July there is a sculpture exhibition throughout the gardens. As usual the NT volunteers are superb - very informative. The house is well worth a visit. The designs etc are great. The gardens are excellent. As usual the tea rooms and shop are good. The only negative was that the mens toilets were a bit wiffy
