This church replaced the old Medieval church, which is now an inaccessible, but impressive, ruin next to Birch Manor. Just to the south of this church was a Norman motte and bailey castle, Birch Castle, which was demolished and flattened by the 1700s. It now has a house on it, with a few lumps and bumps to show where the ditch and motte used to be
