Definitely worth seeingnnThese are brass effigies of Sir Nicholas 1531 - 1609 & Lady Dorothy Wadham 1534 - 163 who lived in our village in the late 1500's - early 1600's.nNicholas Wadham came from a long, distinguished line of aristocracy who had taken their name from the manor of Wadham, Knowstone in Devon. The family largely practised law and many were 'Sheriffs of Somerset' - Nicholas being one of them.nNicholas was born in 1531 at Merryfield House sometimes referred to as Wadhams Castle here in liton. He married Dorothy Petre, daughter of William Petre, Secretary of State to King Henry 8th, on 3rd September 1555.nnNicholas & Dorothy lived a rewarding and prosperous life and by the time of Nicholas' death he had amassed a fortune of £14,000. Having studied at Oxford as a boy and throughout his life taking a great interest in learning, it was his wish to build a college at Oxford. He set the plans but died before he could carry them out. He asked his wife, with the help of two close friends, to carry on with the college and left provision in his will to do so. This was no mean feat for a lady in those times and in her seventies, but being faithful to him, she fought off many claims from relatives, lobbied at court, wrote countless letters and finally, 9 years later, in 1618 - Wadham College in Oxford was opened. Sadly, due to her age and health, Dorothy never got to see the college but in the centre square of the grand building stands the Wadham coat of arms together with statues of Nicholas, Dorothy and their King.
The path to the church was lit by candles in glass jars - a nice touch as it was a dark night and there was no street lighting!nnThe Serenade Singers Ilminster Community Choir were there to sing four Carols at the village Carol Service.nWe enjoyed singing in the choir stalls and there were biblical readings and several carols sung. The vicar's sermon was well received and he finished with a song accompanying himself on his guitar.nnThe oldest part of the church is the chancel which is of medieval origin. I took the opportunity to take some photos as the church seems only to be open during services.
Visit 19/12/2023 on a rainy day the lunchtime light giving life to the stain glass windows. Sad to see how many of the old wooden puw's have been removed allegedly due to water damage.

Wonderful preserved church, my partner's mother was married there sometime in the 1930s
