The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Astley, Shropshire, finds its origins as a medieval chapel of ease for the Church of St Mary in Shrewsbury.nThe church in Astley is mentioned in the Domesday Book and features of Norman architecture can be found in several places. Most notably is the blocked South door, decorated with rudimentary dogs-tooth ornamentation. The many grooves found in the stones along the South wall were reportedly created by men sharpening swords and arrows.nSeveral phases of construction and restoration can be seen through the church but the most significant was in 1883 and included extensive repairs to the roof and construction of the tower. In the late 1930s, the chancel was reordered and received a new rood screen, altar and reredos.

A beautiful little church a few minutes off the main road to Shrewsbury . Well worth a visit to see the small intimate interior .
