This place is amazing! I've been there three times now, and every single visit just blows me away! The island is so cool because it's connected by a narrow strip of land that disappears at high tide, making it feel like a part-time island. The lighthouse there is just fascinating. It was built in 1898 and has such a rich history—it was actually in use until 1984. Now, the North Tyneside Council manages it, and they've turned the old keepers' houses into a really cool visitor center. The Nature Reserve there is just a delight. There's a rock pool area, cliff-top grassland, and a beach with newly established wetland habitats. Cycling there is a fantastic way to take in the scenery. The locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. One of my favorite parts was spending time in the bird-watching room. It was just amazing and really encouraged me to learn more about the rare birds found in the area. It's also wonderful to see so many kids participating in educational programs, adding to the lively and learning-focused atmosphere
Unfortunately, we could not visit the lighthouse as it was closed for refurbishment and with the covering was quite an eyesore. However, I have still given 3 stars to acknowledge the lovely area around the island. We arrived as the tide was coming in. This allowed us enough time to investigate the rock pools and watch as the landscape changed and the causeway was quickly covered by the sea. There was a lovely ice cream van in the car park. There are toilets as well but again these were closed when we visited.
Interesting part of the Whitley Bay coast to visit at most times of day. Check the times of low tide if you want to walk across the Causeway to the Lighthouse itself. Even if you cannot reach the Lighthouse, you can still enjoy rewarding views of the coast in both directions. You can observe many seals either sitting up on the rocks surrounding the lighthouse or swimming in the water nearby. The lighthouse itself is a great place to visit with it's high white tower guiding shipping safely along the coast.
Check Tide times before visiting ,car park is now card only. Keep away from the rocks as it disturbs the seals. Beautiful location . Lighthouse steps can be accessed for a small fee, 90 steps but only when volunteers are presentVisited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful little island joined to the mainland when the tide is low. Well worth a visit to see the lighthouse and the wildlife, birds and seals.. Not to miss.
We have visited St Mary's Lighthouse a few times and always call back its easy access and beautiful and good day. Today we saw the seal pups and listed to one of tge guids telling us he had had a long eared owl load there, also within the past couple of months an Osprey. Different every time you visit. Well worth the visit and there's a lovely beach nearby that's dog friendly enjoy !
Great location to visit to see some seals resting as well as some sea birds but it’s important to remember to respect nature and stay quiet to prevent disturbing them. There are always informative staff members/volunteers on the island to answer any questions you have. Just be sure to check tide times to prevent disappointment. It’s a nice spot to park the car and sit and watch the waves during a sunrise or sunset too.
This was the first time to visit the lighthouse at night and it was an amazing experience. Lots of seats available, car parks and nice atmosphere. There is also a nice walk until you reach the lighthouse and the view was amazing. I’m sure the morning view will be also great.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Was really lovely seeing the seals here. Climbed up the steps to the top inside. Nice little gift shop in entry. Doesn't take too long to get around bjt breaks the day up nicely. Be aware of tide times when crossing the causeway. Only lost a star because there was no working toilets there or at the car park. Som nice walks too.Wait timeNo wait
Wonderful views. The climb to the top is not very challenging. Just don't look down the stairs and you'll be fine.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
