Beautiful little hamlet church, looked after by The Historic Churches Trust. Old oak floorboards, low level box pews, remains of a large wall painting. Doesn't seem to have electric lighting, hanging paraffin lanterns. 3 bells.
A unique ancient stone church, there is no electricity or heating so the congregation use candles including a candle chandelier, and a Tilley lamp for light and a gas heater for warmth. The floor is made of long wooden rough planks, the pews look as though they were made by the local carpenter centuries ago and pretty uncomfortable to sit in for the duration of a sermon. The organ is pumped by foot pedals. The whole place is better seen on a sunny warm day rather than the depths of a grey, cold winter. Certainly memorable. It is charming but needs some TLC, although not too much as it is a unique experience.
St Mary’s is my favourite tiny medieval church, and the most tranquil and spiritual space I know of locally. I especially love the ancient corbels norman origin either side of the porch door, the quaint font and quainter font cover , the simple, but gorgeous medieval pews , the lack of electricity inside, the fact it has remained basically unchanged for hundreds of years , and not forgetting the lovely walnut tree , that stands in the churchyard . I love visiting. And have many photos from the visits. I may share some of them.
Very tranquil place
