Fascinating church. Beautifully kept. Quite a steep walk to get to including many steps. The church holds a macabre history. The crypt is well worth a visit holding up to 4000 skulls of danish pirates killed in the battle of Hastings in 1066. Known as the church of skulls.
Impressive historic church in an elevated position overlooking the sea, set within a well kept churchyard in the attractive historic part of Hythe.nThe church of St Leonard is best known for its crypt ossuary, housing the largest collection of human bones in the country. This most unusual of features costs £5 for adults to visit, the rest of the church can be accessed for free during open hours. If you're interested in looking round, check the website for opening times.nIf you'd rather not see the UK's largest collection of human skulls, the rest of the church is still worth a visit, with some fine architectural details, a finely decorated pulpit, impressive organ and picturesque surroundings.
A beautiful church, I would definitely recommend visiting the the crypt.
The ossuary is amazing and the gentleman was very knowledgeable. The church itself is beautiful and has an accessible toilet!

The last ones located in the crypt.nnCrypt open hours are:nnTuesday to Saturday between 11:00 to 4:00 pm with lunch break between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm .nnSundays open hours between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.nnThe church open hours are:nnFrom Monday to Friday: between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.nnOn Saturday: from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.nnOn Sunday : from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm.nnDefinitely recommend it!
