First built in the 11th century by the Norman's and partly rebuilt in 13th and 15th century, the church building is one of the oldest and best known parish churches in Wales.
Lovely place to visit loads to see around the town
I can't believe that I didn't know about this wonderful place before seeing YouTube videos and coverage of the Archaeological digs on TV. It should be every bit as famous in the UK as Lindisfarne or Iona as a birth place of British Christianity. Not only that, it is truly beautiful and moving as you feel surrounded by the echoes of more than fifteen centuries of prayer. Of course, most of the buildings are Norman or later, but the wonderfully repaired Galilee Chapel shows some of the Celtic past in the crosses Imagination can fill in the gaps, much like the glass panels in the chapel walls fill in the gaps in the stone work.nnI was lucky enough to chat to the incumbent Rector, Canon Edwin Counsell, who was so knowledgeable and passionate. He clearly loves the place; but not just because of the history, also because of the Church's living role in the life of the town and the area.nnDefinitely worth a detour. My wife didn't believe me when I said I wanted to add a few hours onto our journey, but she gets it now!
What a beutiful church with so much ancient celtic history. The stones were so interesting and leant a wonderfully peaceful feeling to the church. Norman arches, medieval wall paintings and the Jesse niche make this church a must visit for its history and it's clearly a very welcoming church community.
An atmospheric churchyard that sits on the remains of one of the first celtic collages of christianity. Interestingly, this site is where Saint Patrick and Saint David were educated.nChurch features a small museum like room that holds ancient standing marker stones that commemorate Welsh Kings of old.nAdjacent to the churchyard is a small memorial garden that is surrounded by a small brook.nA must see if in the area.
