I have been a regular visitor to St Gemma's in Otley Charity Shop for some time now and can't praise the staff enough for their outstanding service. From the Manager Grace and the staff Members Morag and Grace and the volunteers Linda, Fran and Elizabeth, who all work tirelessly to ensure the shop runs smoothly and efficiently. Their dedication and hardwork is truly commendable. Everytime I visit I am greeted with friendly smiles and a warm atmosphere. Their friendliness and helpfulness create welcoming environment that makes you want to come back again and again. I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional contribution of all the staff members at St Gemma's Otley, your hardwork and dedication do not go unnoticed and you are a tremendous asset to the community. Thank you for all you do!
I am a regular shopper at the Otley branch, visiting at least once a week, and I can't help but to share my positive experience. The staff here consistently go above and beyond, making each visit a delight. There friendliness and helpfulness sets this charity shop apart from the rest and is why I travel 10 miles to visit there each week. I would also like to say how lovely and helpful the Scottish lady Morag is, who always has a warm welcome and helps you find what you are looking for and has a genuine interest in helping the customers and who is always kind. as well as Linda and Elizabeth who are also helpful and kind too and another lady who I can't remember her name who I have met on several of my visits. I look forward to my weekly visits to find lots of bargains and see the staff in a very friendly atmosphere and I truly enjoy this experience. It is a absolutely amazing shop and staff!
I give 2 stars as for all its faults, Gemma's prices are amazing. Though I am absolutely horrified to read other google reviews. Went in to Gemma's in Otley today and felt completely humiliated by the behaviour of the cashier. I was browsing and went to put the Jacket I had *come into the shop wearing* in my bag. I was immediately shocked at the speed of which the cashier profiled me for putting *my own* clothes into my bag; Ie, in the amount of time to remove one sleeve. I was asked if wanted 'a basket' to which I replied no, was pressed again, replied no, and when the cashier asked why she had done so, did not apologize. She then carried on acting oddly herself, walking around reorganizing fully and overstocked racks, and was so busy rifling through one section facing my direction that she forgot to watch the Till, and thus ignored another customer for over 2 minutes who needed to pay. When I went to pay, all of my clothes were thrown onto the counter in a heap which I then had to fold myself, and I was asked if I had counted the number of items as if I had to prove I had taken anything! The gall! Add to that that items life tops were labelled as 'sanitary items', ie, non-refundable and had their tags removed as if the other failures of judgement where not enough. Other incidents I once thought a once-off, such as cashiers and management being rude to my mother over small print in their refund policy, and other passive aggressive comments from management about returning to pay when I did not have enough change have certainly changed my mind about buying as much as I do. 90% of my experiences have been what I would have expected that is the bare minimum of being treated with some respect, but this was absolutely demeaning and completely unnecessary; not to mention poor customer service. I go into the Otley branch regularly; about once a week at the least or more normally so this was an out of the normal experience. But be warned as a customer or even regular, that some volunteers and management members will look at you like a piece of gum they have walked on, decently dressed and deserving of criticism or not.
Card machine was down which is not their fault. Just felt the way they handled the situation was poor. They could have put a note on the door to let people know instead of waiting until you got to the till to tell you. Was poorly organised situation
How many more negative reviews does the manager/ staff of this particular store need before something is actually done regarding the racist, disability mocking etc of members of the public in this shop. I noticed my review and my daughters review have been deleted yet again for the atrocious way I was spoken to and discussed very loudly between colleagues in front of myself and family regarding my lack of unseen disability. Who are you people to judge, you should be ashamed! Will never step foot in that racist, bigoted, place again. Unfortunately reading the reviews I can see it is still happening to other customers even though I was assured the member of staff would be dealt with and it would never happen again. Shame on you.
This afternoon I went into St Gemma's hospice charity shop in Otley. I was upstairs looking at books when two Asian women came into the shop and asked the price of some items. A woman who works at St Gemma's Hospice Scottish, wears glasses, possibly Manager, rather abruptly informed them of the price, and when the women misunderstood and asked again the Manager became quite passive aggressive. She very publicly went down the stairs to inform the cashier that the women wouldn't be able to get both items for the price of one, shouting about it on her way back up and then went into the back room to loudly chat to her colleagues about the women, making racist remarks. If I could hear the Manager, I'm sure the Asian women could also hear her. She indiscreetly attempted to lower her voice and there was a discussion about 'these women' trying to make a bargain. I regularly go into St Gemma's hospice to buy and donate items and usually find it a fine place, but today it felt unsafe, unfriendly and to be frank, a rather disgusting atmosphere. I won't be going back again.
Very helpful staff and happy to help. They remember me too which is a lovely thought and it is warm and welcoming atmosphere. Staff are very happy here unlike other st Gemma’s I have been into.
Wide ranges of products, with nrw stock always being added and rotated. Clothes from 99p, childrens clothes 25p. Books are 50p, including hardbacks, children's books 25p. Staff are friendly and helpful, the store whilst always busy is never overly crowded and I would heartily recommend visiting and purchasing products from the shop to help a truly local charity.
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. What person has the right to question a person's disability hidden or obvious especially in front of customers in the shop and humiliating her. I am thoroughly disgusted at the treatment of this lady and whoever this PERSON that runs this shop you should be dealt with accordingly ie dismissed.. Shame on you.
Great little charity shop, though usually a little crowded. Very reasonably priced!
