Fascinating cave unexpectedly located opposite quaint cottages on Cove Wynd.nYou can pick up the key for just £1 from The Cocoa Tree shop a couple of minutes walk away, and I'd highly recommend a coffee and cake while you're there.nThe cave itself extends further back than I'd imagined, carved out by the sea and a river which once flowed through the cave to the Firth of Forth. The cave's geology is a mixture of limestone and sandstone. It's the largest and most impressive cave of several I visited around the East Neuk.nThe cave is believed to have been inhabited by hermits and visited by pilgrims from Ireland and the European continent. There's a detailed information sheet inside the cave explaining the story of St Fillan. Today the cave serves as a shrine to St Fillan and occasionally hosts Christian services.
St. Fillans Cave was a fantastic visit. We got the key for a donation of £2 a very atmospheric place.
Bigger than I thought it would be. Certainly worth a look if you're in the area. The key is available from the Cocoa Tree Chocolate Shop which is barely 2 minute walk away.
You have to get the key from The cocoa tree shop on the high street. It's £1 per adult and it goes to the upkeep of the cave. It's intregin when you look through the gate as to what might be inside. When inside there not much to look at.There is a stair case to no where and two rooms. We were in for 10 mins and had to walk back up the hill to hand the key back.
Small cave in very unusual location before you read small information brochure. To get in you need to pop it to the Chocolate Shop for a key to the gate and contribute £1 per adult, children no fees.
