St Chad's Cathedral

Story

The Metropolitan Cathedral Church and Basilica of Saint Chad is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Birmingham and province of the Catholic Church in Great Britain and is dedicated to Saint Chad of Mercia. Built by Augustus Welby Pugin and substantially complete by 1841, St Chad's is one of the first four Catholic churches that were constructed after the English Reformation and raised to cathedral status in 1852. It is one of only four minor basilicas in England (the others being Downside Abbey, the National Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham and Corpus Christi Priory, this last now disused). St Chad's is a Grade II* listed building. The cathedral is located in a public greenspace near St Chad's Queensway, in central Birmingham. the Archbishop was Bernard Longley and the Dean Canon Gerry Breen.

St Chad's Cathedral is a massive, gorgeous cathedral right at the heart of Birmingham City. It is a huge, exquisite, and historical cathedral, with extraordinary architecture, a huge balcony where the choir sings, statues around the inside, and a magnificent alter. It has some relics of St John Henry Newman, towering pillars, statues depicting the 12 Stations of the Cross, stunning and colourful strained windows. Mass is celebrated weekly at the cathedral, and everyone who comes through the doors are warmly welcomed and invited in. The Cathedral has a lovely shop just next door to it, that sells statues, books, Rosaries, and many other religious items. If you're able to, I highly recommend visiting this amazing cathedral so you can see the beauty of it for yourself, and even say a few prayers.

I have passed this building on many occasions and must admit that, from the outside, it does not impress me I had the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the cathedral and found it to be a most interesting structure. It was designed by Pugin and he certainly wanted to create an impressive building. I had the opportunity to go to the crypt which is not normally open to the public and even found this to be a most interesting area of the cathedral. The guides were so knowledgeable and willing to answer questions, not only about the cathedral but also aspect of the Catholic faith.
Having often wondered what the city cathedral was like inside, myself and my boyfriend happened to walk past this evening, and entered the cathedral after seeing people inside and welcome notes on the doors. However, we had walked up one aisle to the altar across and started walking back down the other aisle, to then be approached from behind by a man who forcefully and rudely told us that “we should leave NOW”!!!! We were the only people approached and asked to leave….. guess it must of been my horns and trident that did it!!!!! Rest of staff at least apologised and made things better but I’m shocked and hurt that only select people are allowed inside the cathedral and we weren’t good enough……
A very nice kirche right outside city center. Beautiful architecture. Murals are preservex with many many on walls, pillars and above door arches. Nicest photos at dusk because the sun goes down on the side where the door is. It has recently opened up for limited entrance but never the less opened up after a long time.

Very Beautiful Cathedral. If you are attending the second mass on Sunday, you will hear the amazing sound of the organ from the back of the Cathedral.
