For an upmarket takeaway spot, Square Pie fills a need but it simply didn't 'wow' me. I enjoyed the variety of pies and settled on a timeless classic, the Guinness and Steak Pie. Perhaps I arrived at the wrong time, but my pie felt like it was sitting in the warmer a little too long and the mash felt floury and a bit dry. Overall it was still good, just not quite as great as the hype had built it up to be one accolade claimed the best Pie in London. You are hard pressed to beat a great pie on a wintry day, so fingers crossed I get a better run next time I drop by.
Best London pie I've found. Had a variety of options there and all have been good. Nice variety of sides and a broad pie selection. Price is high enough to give pause, but only momentarily. Their steak and cheese pie is pretty good. All their chicken is halal, which is a nice touch for some.
Fantastic! The lamb and rosemary pie we wanted was in the oven when we stopped by and the manager took time to chat with us, letting us know when it would be ready and taking our order so she could box up our dinner as soon as it was out of the oven. She also went through the drinks cooler with me trying to find something not too sugary. The whole meal was great. The mash and gravy were tasty, the garden peas were fresh and the pie filled the room with the aroma of rosemary once we cracked the crust open. We will definitely be back.
I popped into Square Pie for a quick takeaway lunch and was actually pleasantly surprised. I expected the place to be slightly grubby but it was very inviting and the staff were lovely - they helped me choose between the multiple! vegetarian options and explained the difference between the different types of pies. I went for a spinach and feta pie which was filling, although it could have been a big more flavoursome. Their packaging could also do with being a bit more pie-friendly - they're currently just rather large rectangular boxes.
I am not British so I am not used to eating savoury pies, but I really enjoyed the butternut squash with spinach and goat cheese pie at the Square Pie. I also liked the side 'chilli con carne.' It was the best chilli I have had in London so far. I wish I could just take it away for lunch on its own. The meat was cooked to perfection and the beans well-seasoned. The pie was only £3.50, which I thought was decent deal given that the place is right in Old Spitalfields Market.
When you see this shop open, you must go! I had to go back 4 times in order to try one of their pies because it was closed every time before. Only open I believe on Saturdays and Sundays, it is definitely worth stopping in for. The best pies in London, in my opinion, they have a flakey crust that just melts in your mouth. It is affordable as well and has a nice patio to enjoy the atmosphere of the market.
Visited the O2 restaurant because my daughter decided that she absolutely needed sausages and mash for lunch. The sausages were good. The mash was "too salty" and contained small pieces of some other vegetable more like stamppot, in fact despite the menu boasting "Maris Piper potatoes steamed fresh in store throughout the day with a little butter, milk, salt and pepper and never anything else." A small carton of Ribena that can be bought in Tesco for 26p cost £1.50. My chicken pie was lukewarm and served on a cold plate so it was basically cold by the time I'd half finished it. It tasted good, and probably would have been even better if it had been warm. Can't comment on the chips because they didn't have any. A disappointing experience overall.
Tasty pies served up in seconds at this branch of Square Pie I tend to go for the lamb and rosemary. If you're around Spitalfields Market on a cold and wet day there's nowhere better to eat. My only complaint is that it's a tad overpriced - 90p for a single scoop of albeit really nice mashed potato is not on.
Square pie cater for our fashion shows. The Costas and their teams are so accommodating to our often crazy delivery hours and endless changing of orders and plans. The food is delicious and always goes down very well.
So the USP of this upmarket pie and mash joint is all in the name, because, yes, the pies are indeed square. But apart from that there's little that stands out. Dependable, tasty pies in a range of traditional and not-so-traditional flavours. But nothing that really stands out.
