Story

The Spyglass is one of the iconic buildings of Ventnor and has a reputation that is founded on good grub, great beer and a fantastic atmosphere. This is enhanced by the live music which is presented free of charge most evenings as well as lunchtime on Sundays and features many of the Isle of Wight's top local musicians. You might imagine, being so close to the water's edge, seafood is a specialty at the Spyglass with fresh crab and lobster delivered straight to door from the Ventnor Haven fishery. The Spyglass Admiral's Platter is the stuff of legend!

As you approach the Spyglass Inn, with its superb terrace, you can’t help but be impressed by its wonderful location. For centuries Ventnor Bay has been the haunt of smugglers with contraband being carried over from the French coast only a few hours sail away. The spirit of those days are captured on the walls of the pub, which are loaded with fascinating maritime pictures and artifacts and create a unique and memorable experience.

And of course it was The Spyglass that pioneered its own distinct admissions policy: 'Muddy boots & well behaved dogs welcome', that is now (thankfully) echoed by other proper pubs up and down the country.

Wow is all I can say about this pub/restaurant on the Ventnor seafront on the Isle of Wight. The food is exceptional and the setting is ideal. If the weather is good you can sit outside with just a few feet from the sea, literally. A truly beautiful place that you will want to go back to again and again, believe me. I can highly recommend The Spy Glass. Give it a shot, you will not be disappointed. 5 stars for cleanliness and tasty food.
A great pub with amazing views. We were lucky enough to visit on a sunny day and sat outside. There is plenty of outdoor seating. The staff were very friendly and hard working. Good choice on the menu. Food was delicious. Would definitely recommend.
Didn't stay here but have had afternoon tea and dinner. The food is great pub grub, generous serves and tasty. Service is friendly and efficient. This is a lovely fisherman's hut by the sea type of place with a great atmosphere. A number of small areas to sit both inside and out, and enjoy listening to the piano player or gazing at the ocean. Walkability: Situated at one end of the Esplanade, it is down a steep hill at the other from the town centre, so a good level of fitness is required to get back up the hill afterwards. There is limited paid parking on the Esplanade and a wheelchair friendly entrance to the Inn.
Love this place. Been coming here for quite possibly over 25-30 years on and off and it’s not changed much. The location is unbeatable and the atmosphere is always good the food the same. Staff are great. So if you are looking for good food and a great sea location you can’t beat it. Great in the winter much nicer in the summer sitting outside. But a great place.
Always a nice little pub to visit, a friend has come to visit and remembers the tasty unsociable burger, so we had to go back. Friendly staff and great service as always. Normally take the dog but she stayed at home this time.
Lovely location overlooking sea. Didn't try the menu, but it looked appealing and not too costly. Maybe slightly overdoing it with the memorabilia but still very relaxing.Service: 5/5
Beautiful location. Many visits here but the menu is just a little to pricy for us so we have not eaten here in many years. When busy you can sit in the back bar, the staff were very kind to put the music and heating on.Service: 3/5
Tasty home cooked food. Always a must visit when we visit the island. Pub is in a beautiful setting, great views and really cosy inside. Highly recommend
Had perfect table at a window. Weather awful, but still nice having the sea view. Just had drinks and nuts, but a varied menu, albeit a bit pricey, for e.g. Whitebait was £15. Nearby activities: Near beach, museum, cafes and pier. Walkability: Short esplanade and beach. Food & drinks: Pricey menu, but varied. Ales and other pub drinks available.
For many years this has been the go to place for a drink by the South Coast. Still now the higgledy piggledy, pirate era pub interior with its nautical paraphernalia is a highlight of an island pub visit. Outside there are many many tables although on the sunniest days it can be a wait. Every table has an amazing sea view. Many real ales and gins to try, but the consistent pub grub is worth paying for. Fish pie recommended.
