South Foreland Lighthouse
"The first lighthouse to use an electric lightA landmark of the White Cliffs, the Victorian lighthouse was built to warn mariners of shifting sands and guide them through the Strait of Dover. A place of innovation and science, the lighthouse was the first to display an electric light anywhere in the world.Today you can still enjoy views of the channel to the French coast by climbing all the way to the top. See what it was like to work here and what a lighthouse keeper did while on duty. Wave to ships in the channel and watch the Victorian clockwork mechanism that made the lighthouse flash.Or for a more relaxing time just borrow a kite from us or play one of our games on the lawn. You can step back in time at Mrs Knott’s Tea-room."

It's a very long walk but definitely worth it!! Many paths to walk on, depending if you're looking for something adventurous or peaceful, with so many photo opportunities. If you walk all the way to the lighthouse closes 5pm, you can have a break to relax and have some tea and snacks, and see the view from the top of the lighthouse.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The views of the White Cliffs are stunning and just 5’ from the lighthouse, however the GPS wants to take you right to the lighthouse and that’s not possible. I finally left the cat at St. Margaret’s and reached the lighthouse on foot 15’ more. That’s not a problem for me but this should be noticed in case you were going there with elderly people / children.
Dear friends. I'll tell you a little about this place. We came there and bought a ticket for 10 pounds, we didn't wait. We entered and the guide told us everything about this place and gave us a tour. we went up to the 3rd floor from there you could see France and a very wonderful view. The weather was beautiful and people sat near this place and sunbathed, and someone just ate on the bench. There is also a restaurant-cafe, a souvenir shop and a small corner with games for children..I recommend..
Nice place for a picnic. Great sights across the Channel / Dover Bay. It Costs to enter the lighthouse. Shop is ok. Not much going on. Walkable, across level fields, from St Margaret’s. Hilly walk down to St Margaret’s Bay be warned: fitness levels may be tested to walk back to the lighthouse or back up to St Margaret’s village
This is National Trust site so if you are planning to visit 2 or more NT sites in one year become a member. The tunnels almost next door to the lighthouse is also a NT site. There is no parking here so you have to walk either along the cliffs 50 mins from the NT visitors centre or use the service road a bit quicker. The last tour is around 3.30pm. All the NT staff are volunteers and very friendly. There is a cafe that serves cream teas which was very popular at the time we visited. There are deckchairs and a lot of picnic space so you can sit and admire the views of the French coast. There are games for kids too! A lovely place to visit on a fine day
Approximately 50 mins walk from the visitor centre to reach this lighthouse, but worth to pay a visit. View is spectacular, with the white cliff and occasional French coast view. You have to buy another £6 ticket in order to get on top to the Lighthouse.
Waw! Waw! and Waw! It’s very iconic, small yet full of charm, history and memories from the past. The light house is closed on week days so unfortunately we couldn’t get a tour. But the small coffee shop with limitless outside seating area over looking the water, and picnic blankets to borrow. The tea is served in antique tea pots & cups, but the cakes are modern. Loved the fresh air, if you can’t do the 50 minutes walk you can also drive there.
Tea room with tea coffee and cakes pots of coffee no espresso. Really well kept toilets and a small shop. Tea room shuts at 5pm on Saturdays. If the ground is dry a fairly easy walk from the visitors centre, not suitable for buggies though unless you come via the road.
Spectacular views, highly recommend if you are a "coast over", like I am. The tearoom is fantastic, the decoration keeps the essence of the Victorian style, using a bit of imagination, and with the help of the background music, you can go back in time easily. I did the lighthouse tour, I found it really interesting and Victor, our gide, made it unforgettable with all the historical details and his enthusiasm.
This place is really fab and a perfect resting point whether you are continuing on or turning around. It has super clean, modern toilets, a little shop, tea rooms, water refill and places to clean off muddy or dusty boots. It has lots of chairs and tables outside where you can rest before continuing on in your walk. It is so nice to have somewhere like this. You can also buy tickets to tour the lighthouse
