Smailholm Tower
"Last entry is at 5pm. This 20-metre-high stronghold, built in the 1400s, dominates the skyline. On a clear day you can see as far as Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. The author Sir Walter Scott spent much of his childhood on a farm below the tower, where he first heard the stories that made up his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders, the subject of an exhibition here."

Loved visiting here even on a typical dreich day. Not far from where we were staying but until you were quite close to it you would have no idea it was there. Arrived first thing so got the whole tower to ourselves so it gave us time to look at everything. The staff member was great and very friendly/ knowledgeable, telling us about the history of the tower etc Would highly recommend going to this tower if in the area. Not a busy site unfortunately unless in summer time so would encourage more people to go see it
Historic Tower. A fortified farmhouse standing on a hill with panoramic views. The tower is open to the public for a small fee. Do use the audio guide to get the full story and allow an hour to listen to it all. The steps up are a little bit of a climb but do go all the way up to the balustrades to see the views over the border lands. We thought it was so much better than we expected.
A very brief stop at the end of the day on a Sunday, so we didn't get to go inside unfortunately. Stunning location, with fantastic views all around.
We visited here with our little boy without expecting a great deal. The views are cracking, the lad in the shop was friendly but there wasn't much to see/do whilst there. They do have some small figurines on show on each floor but that's all. Worth the visit for the views alone especially if you're part of Heritage Scotland or similar.
Stunning location and well presented Tower. Car park at the base of the tower, then a short walk to the Tower itself. We'll worth a visit.
Nice place to visit and views are awesome. But a pricy admission to see stuffed dolls but great for the view. Visit on a sunny clear day.
Absolutely recommended, a hidden gem of a tower. And the staff member Ian needs a medal for his customer service a jolly bloke.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

The building is in good condition capped by a turf roof that was a bit of a surprise. Unfortunately there were few story boards so very little of the history to read but an audio guide is available although my hearing prevents me using them.Access to the various floors is by the original stone spiral staircase and each floor is essentially just one large room. The top floor affords access to the two parapets with fabulous views. For me this is only worth a visit if you're passing en route to somewhere else. We were there about 20mins but several others were in and out in less than 10mins.
A very interesting place to visit if you like historical buildings. A little off the beaten track but well worth a look. There is a car park but no toilets. The views around the tower are wonderful when the weather is clear and if you climb the stairs to the top even better. Our visit was pre-covid.
