Visited on a Saturday, it wasn't over busy, and we did a self guided tour, which worked better for our group than a guided tour. We took our time and had a great experience.nnAlot of history at the prison and only recently closed as a prison, so its interesting to see a more current prison environment and what life behind bars was for them recently.nnNice little restaurant also on site and staff were friendly.nnGreat visit thank you.
This is a great place to visit but the staff particularly one is rude. There is a pay and display car oark opposite but very small. There is a car park a little 3 mknute walk down hill but it is such a faff, can't book by the hour and will cost you around 6 pound for the day and then you have to walk up the small hill to the prison. The prison has amble space at the back for parking, however it is not allowed to be used for the public, was told this is because of uneven ground but althiugh it was uneven it would not have been a problem and the woman could have handled the situagion beyter instead of a big drama and being rude about it. Once in though it was very interesting and we did speak to a very nice ex prison guard who works here as a tour guide. He was very pleasant. There is a cafe here which is a little pricey but plenty of seats. There is a very small shop which does not have a lot of choice of purchase. They do events and you can stay the night but this is pre- bookable so check website. Other than this I think once you have been you have been and thats that and I also do think it could be improved in the way of customer car parking.
A fantastic visit, we had the guided tour , our guide was a lovely fella called Grahame , he was informative & very good at what he did . We all found it very interesting & really enjoyed the whole experience. Would highly recommend to anyone who has any sort of interest in either history or prison life or in fact both .
This was a real working prison until 2013. You can tour the prison, see where they check the prisoners in , see inside all the cells and there's also a drop room where they used to hang people! They also have an escape room option which I didn't do as I was with my children. It was a real insight to what it would be in prison.Definitely not wheelchair or pram friendly. There's a cafe and a little gift shop.
Has all potential of being a great visit, but it lacks structure. Not a lot of literature/info to read & some of the audible speakers didn’t work either however it really brought it home what prison was like when it closed and as we seemed to be the only couple there it made the feeling very eerie!
