Stayed here as a last-minute decision recently and am glad I did. Staff were welcoming, the downstairs room was amazing and full of lovely little touches, spotlessly clean and could not fault a thing. The breakfast was also really good and lots of choice available. I will 100% be returning next time we visit Yorkshire.
For the last fourteen years I have rated the Shoulder of Mutton 5*, how quickly things can change. Kate has disappeared without trace and a new face, Sarah, now seems to be running the place. There remain plenty of gluten free options on the menu, but one has to wonder for how long. There has often been some background music, but always at a minimal non-interfering level. Our previous visit, it was at a historic high. Today when we arrived it was back at a comfortable, discrete level. Part way through our wait for our lunch to arrive it was turned up, forcing all the customers to speak louder in competition. I am autistic. I struggle against being overwhelmed when trying to block out an excess of stimuli. I don't expect to leave a meal out more tired than when I arrived. As we settled up Sarah asked if everything was OK with the meal. Yes, I replied, except for the increase in the level of the music. The "oh I am sorry" was so insincere that even I could spot it.
WOW an amazing traditional pub with lovely beers, in a lovely location close to Harrogate and York . The food especially Mutton is excellent, service is very good. All the staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean , under floor heating, plenty of hot water for the shower. One of the best accommodation plus pub we have ever stayed in.
Fantastic pub, really friendly and welcoming! Had a lovely fire on when I was there and the room I stayed in was so nice! Super clean and well equipped. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again! 10/10
Absolutely lovely little place. Fantastic atmosphere. The food was gorgeous and the gluten free options were out of this world. I was so stunned at the amount of options I had as a coeliac. The staff were all amazing. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt well cared for. My husband had the shoulder of mutton and I had steak. We both shared the milk chocolate baileys creme brulé which was heaven! With a huge GF short bread! Unfortunately we didn't get a pic of the pud as it disappeared pretty quickly. It was all delicious and we can't wait to return.
Warm and cosy. A really varied menu...tasty...served piping hot. Loved the fact that "small plates" were available. Staff and surroundings were lovely ...worth a visit.. we'll certainly be back
Excellent meal, service and general ambience. We particularly liked the idea of having a slightly smaller portion of both main course and dessert : this is something not seen enough on menus and makes perfect sense in terms of food waste and avoiding overeating.
This has become a regular location for us, it's just so good! I absolutely adore lamb, I consider it the "king of meats" and as the name suggests, the Shoulder of Mutton specialises in damn good lamb. I really don't get excited about food but this is so tender and tasty we barely look at the menu any more! We have on occasion forced ourselves to try other things and the other food is equally fantastic but... well, you see where I'm going with this. The pub itself is a lovely old Yorkshire village pub, tastefully traditional but not tired. Very cosy, roaring fire in the winter etc. Staff are professional, friendly and efficient. We've never had to wait too long for food so it must be a slick operation behind the scenes too. Menu is small but well thought out and there are usually plenty of specials so there is always variety of choice. Desserts are as good as the mains and there are smaller portions available so you can enjoy without being over faced. I'm not much of a drinker but they do keep a very nice pint of Black Sheep. I recommend this place to everyone looking for good food and nobody has reported disappointment so far. It's a truly excellent "Sunday pub" if that makes sense and we'll be visiting for as long as we live in the area.
We loved it. We had a lunch with my partner and really enjoyed it. The staff are exceptionally polite and friendly. Good priced menus as well. We definitely recommend it
Was staying in York and on our way home back to Birmingham we came across this lovely pub, when we got in there all tables were reserved apart from three of them and now I know why, we had one roast beef dinner and a hot roast beef baguette, it was the best we have ever had, the beef was so succulent and tasty and the staff were very attentive friendly and polite. We would love to go back if in the area and maybe stay over.
