Sheriff Lodge has a long history having been built in 1740 and is now a comfortable relaxing bed and breakfast. It is at the tranquil end of Matlock and well situated for all ages and amenities.

Story

Having started as a cottage in 1740 and extended in 1908, Sheriff Lodge is now a five bedroomed bed and breakfast. It is suited to all walks of life, including dogs, children and all ages. All dietary needs are catered for including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. The breakfast is sublime and will set you up well for the day ahead. Each order is prepared by locally sourced produce and homemade jams, marmalade, bread and Hollandaise sauce will tempt you. There are walks close by as well as plenty of attractions for all ages and abilities. There are always vouchers to use for attractions such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and currently Gulliver's Kingdom. There is also a private sitting room for guest's use which provides local information, maps, brochures etc as well as magazines, books, DVDs, games and newspapers. The Lodge is in the more tranquil area of Matlock and the town is and all its restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance. Free onsite parking.

My Partner and I stayed in April for a short stay exploring the Peak District. We had a great time during our stay, the room was beautiful, warm, quiet and very comfortable, breakfast was homemade and delicious, and it was in a great location being only a 10 minute walk into the centre of Matlock where there are plenty of places to shop, eat and things to do. Off road parking was much appreciated also. Ziz was great at communicating and provided lots of information about the surrounding areas, we booked a meal at the Stones restaurant which was fantastic! It was a wonderful stay and such great experience, we would love to stay again! Thank you Ziz! Definitely recommend! Rooms: The room was very comfortable, warm, beautifully decorated and a great size! The bathroom was clean, warm and the toiletries were lovely. The bed was bed comfortable and the sheets were lovely. Nearby activities: Plenty of walks, vintage shops, gift shops, places to eat and several attractions a short drive or train journey away. We particularly enjoyed walking at the nearby Lumsdale falls, the peak railway, the Stones restaurant and Scarthin books in Cromford. Walkability: Matlock highstreet is a 10 minute walk away, downhill, with plenty of shops, places to eat, attractions and the train station nearby. Food & drinks: Homemade breakfast every morning of our stay was hot, tasty, very generous portions and there was plenty of choice we could’ve had something different each day! Fresh fruit, Derbyshire oatcakes, local produce and so much more, all cooked to order in the lovely setting of the drawing room.
A real find. Lovely welcome and accommodation with good linen and large fluffy white towels. The best afternoon tea ever- a lot of skill in the preparation. The breakfast was superb with the best fresh fruit berries and a perfect cooked breakfast. Easy walking into town but set in peaceful stunning gardens. Highly recommended.Rooms: 5/5

We stayed here for two nights visiting Matlock for a cycling event. The host, Ziz, was incredibly welcoming with great communications in the run up to arrival. She let us keep our bikes in the house as we needed them first thing in the morning although there is a secure bike shed too! Lovely rooms and the house/ gardens are very nicely presented. Brilliant breakfast too. Just a short walk from Matlock town centre. Would stay here again for sure. Thank you, Ziz!
Have stayed at Sheriff Lodge a number of times so I knew what to expect - very high standards across the board - cleanliness, comfort, personal little touches such as chocolates in the rooms, a box of "things you might have forgotten", and of course the best ever breakfast; I asked the host Ziz for a box of her sublime home made chocolates which were waiting for us in our room. We also had afternoon tea when we arrived and it really was the best you could ask for. I would never stay anywhere else in Matlock. Sheriff Lodge is an outstanding hotel and is simply the best.
Had a wonderful stay at Sheriff Lodge, Ziz was incredibly accommodating and approachable. We made good use of the guest discounts and visited two great restaurants in Matlock. A substantial breakfast each morning with lots of options, loved the veggie sausages as well! Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the shower was great. Ziz has a great knowledge of the local area recommending some brilliant walks that we would never have found online. Also we were lucky enough to meet Sakura the puppy with was an added bonus on a great weekend away. We will definitely be recommending Sheriff Lodge to friends and hope to be back soon!
For us, This was the first time visiting Matlock, we first booked to stay in the Sheriff Lodge for December 2023 but unexpectedly we had to change dates, So Ziz the owner of The Sheriff Lodge let us change our dates without losing our Deposit. Which we were very grateful. We made the change for Easter! I have to say, we are so pleased we booked the Sheriff Lodge. We stayed in The Warren room which was in the Basement and it had its own Entrance to the room, it is lovely Decorated, and very cosy, it is clean to a high standard, We couldn’t fault it at all. The Breakfast - I must admit we have stayed at many b&b’s all around the UK and this is the best cooked breakfast we have ever had, with a good choice on the menu with a good genuine size portion on the cooked breakfast, which suited my husband. It Definitely filled us up for the day, in fact until we had our evening meal. We also had a choice of a time slot for breakfast, so we chose an early slot which suited us as we get up early at home, and this way we could be out nice and early for the day. The reason we choose The Sheriff Lodge was because the owner does not allow dogs in the rooms, and this was what I was looking for, I must Stress! that I do not have anything against dogs as I love all animals, no matter how much you can clean and hoover up you can always smell a dog on the carpets and furniture, and Dog hair sets my Asthma off really bad, to a stage where I would need medical treatment. So this was a big Plus for Me. The Location is Ideal, down the street you have the local shops, coffee shops and places to eat. However there is a bit of a bank if you want to walk back up to the B&B, So on the evening when we went out for food, we walked down to the pub and got a Taxi back as we went to the other side of Matlock for food, So we thought a Taxi would be best after having a few beers. Would we return to The Sheriff Lodge - yes most definitely if we visited Matlock again and I'm sure we will, The Sheriff Lodge would be the place for us, So Thank you Ziz for a pleasant stay and keep up the good work, you have an amazing B&B. I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited Sheriff Lodge. We keep returning because it’s simply the best B&B we’ve ever visited, and Ziz is a wonderful host! This time we tried Ziz’s Chatsworhh platter and it was absolutely delicious! With home made bread and chutney too, it was everything we hoped for. Her breakfasts were also of the usual very high standard. Ziz sources high quality ingredients and cooks them to perfection. Her breakfasts are second to none! Ziz had also refurbished our favourite room for this stay. It certainly didn’t need refurbishing, but looked beautiful and was as comfortable as ever, and her usual thoughtful extra touches were greatly appreciated. We’ve already booked our next stay and highly recommend both Ziz and Sheriff Lodge!

Ziz owns and operates the Sherrif's Lodge with the highest consideration for the guests' experience. The comfort, food, views, and location could not be better, we had a perfect stay and hope to return. Rooms: Very comfortable mattress and pillows, hard to find while traveling. Walkability: It's a short 10 minute walk into town and Matlock is stunningly beautiful -- it's movie set perfect.
