An alright railway station with its share of pros and cons. To start with the negatives, the foyer and platforms still look and feel incredibly dated. Certainly not a great look for one of England's largest cities. Surprisingly small, though in this location not sure where they'd find more land to potentially expand. Toilets are absolutely disgusting! Who could even stomach going for a comfort break there?? They need to be cleaned far more regularly and/or possibly refurbished. To its credit, ticket machines are fine in number, it is well connected to the Supertram just behind the station and there's an easy to reach taxi rank by the side. Of the pros, the area immediately outside definitely looks much better now than it did 20 years ago. Modern and attractive fountains, a cool looking salmon sculpture made of steel, and a great little mobile coffee bar outside operated by Motore Cafe. The retail and catering choices in the foyer offer a bit more choice these days. Really love the cart that does cookies and cakes. The brilliant Forge Bakehouse also has a stand, so you can sample their terrific baked goods before or after a train journey.
Nice and clean, everything works as it should, police was around but they keep themselves to themselves and I think it's nice to have their presence. The only thing that is annoying is that you have to pay 20 pence for the loos, it's not about paying for it it's if you haven't got change.
Interesting reading other peoples reviews, many were negative. Mostly it seemes caused by frustration using a unfamiliar and imperfect system. All I can say is stay with it and work it out. The trains from Sheffield can be good and they can be cheap. There are some wonderful places to go to!
14 October 2018 at 11:45: Why is there a charge of 30p to use this public toilet on the main concourse at Sheffield Station when it is not kept clean and tidy?
The front toilet is absolute disgusting. There is 4 toilet in place but you can use only 2 as 2 toilet doesnt have a door, or the toilet broken. The queue is always big because of this and smell is horrible too.
