We had an internal flood downstairs and Servicemaster responded quickly; they took photos, reported to the insurers, and followed up regularly. However, because we had laminate floors downstairs we only had rugs, one of them being a woollen John Lewis rug and the other an expensive and very beautiful woollen Chinese hand knotted rug. The former took the brunt of the damage and was very wet, the Chinese rug was only wet on a corner, about 20%. It was collected only 15 or so hours after the incident and we had removed a lot of the water with a Vax borrowed from a neighbour. They were duly cleaned and dried by Servicemaster and their representive said they were hanging in their 'drying room' and looked very good, he even showed us a photograh. As we had to replace all the floors we asked if they could store them until we were finished. They agreed and we heard no more. A few months later we received a call from the manager to say that the rugs had rotted and could not be saved!! Now, bearing in mind that the Chinese rug had only one damp corner, we were rather bemused but as it was all in the hands of the insurers we didn't think we could query this with them direct. The insurers asked for quotes, which we had from a specialist in oriental rugs, and they sent us a cheque. Unfortunately, the Chinese rug was no longer available 'off the shelf' in the right colour so it would have to be made, taking approximately 12 months to get from China. Also, because, on it's own, it cost more than the insurance limit for one item, we did not get the full amount from the insurers. I don't believe that these rugs could have rotted as they were cleaned and dried very quickly after collection (so we were told) unless they were stored damp. BE WARNED, don't leave your precious rugs with Servicemaster, get them back as soon as they are cleaned and make sure they are dry, wool will rot if left damp. We did not replace our beautiful rug because the cost is more than we can afford now. I wish we had pursued the matter with Servicemaster ourselves.
