Seabank Hotel

Story

The Seabank Hotel is an historic hotel located in Porthcawl, southern Wales. The hotel is located on the corner of the front Esplanade and Picton Avenue overlooking the sea. The current building is dated to the mid-1930s. The distinctive white building with its red tiled roof, along with the Grand Pavilion several metres to the east, is one of the town's most prominent landmarks. The hotel has 89 rooms.HistoryThe hotel originally began around 1860 as a smaller building named the New House and was built by George Derent, an architect who designed John Street in Porthcawl.Around 1870, a larger house was built on the site and was named "The Seaview Bank". It was bought by the prominent Brogden family and John Brogden, an important figure in the town's development in the late 19th century (who gave his name to John Street) simplified the name to "Sea Bank House". This building was built with grey stonework and over time the building developed moss on the walls around the French windows. It had a prominent Italianate style tower at the front and a quaint little garden was once located at the front side of the hotel.Around 1890, the family fell into financial difficulties and it became Porthcawl College and was run by Reverend E.J. Newell of Oxford University until 1907 when it was purchased as a private residence by John Elias. In the 1930s a new structure and modern concrete facade was built to and it was renamed the "Seabank Hydro" hotel. During World War II the hotel was used as a base by the military and the 49th (West Riding) Reconnaissance Regiment was formed at the hotel in 1942. In 1943, US troops of the 107 Field Artillery Battalion of the 28th Infantry Division were stationed at the hotel, followed by the 75th Infantry Division in 1944 to train before the Battle of the Bulge.

Nice clean room, shower, ect. Comfortable bed.nBreakfasts were very good.nThe evening meals were reasonable and we had a good choice.nI found the soups a bit tasteless except for the tomato.nOne meal casserole was very salty.nOn the whole it was an enjoyable stay the staff were friendly and very helpful.nI would stay there again
Travelled as a part of coach holiday and stayed for 4 nights. Welcomed by the hotel manager and the reception staff. Our cases were taken to our room which was on the ground floor and not far from the main areas of the hotel. Our room was very spacious as it was a family sized and plenty of room to move around. Bathroom was equally big and not cramped. Meal times were suitable and the menu was varied and choice. The staff were very pleasant and attentive. Nothing was much trouble. I am enjoying my stay here and would stay here again.
We were allocated a room with a window facing the inner square of the building. Though it was spring weather the room was unpleasantly hot. It did not help that the window only opened a couple of inches. There was often humming & the noise of drains persisting throughout the night. The hotel, once you get past the lobby & downstairs communal areas is very tired & rundown looking. For the price I think we could have fared better elsewhere. The one positive was the excellent performance of the staff. Friendly & attentive. A credit to the establishment.
Having stayed at this hotel at least 3 or 4 times in the past, on the last occasion we were there which was 2 years ago, we decided that the evening meal was so poor that we wouldn't stay there again but I had heard that it was now under the care of a new manager and things had been greatly improved, so we decided to give it another try. We were not disappointed. Improvements have been made to the outside appearance, with all new double glazed windows to the front and sides and new carpets in a lot of the areas. We paid a supplement to have a sea view room and this had huge bay windows and we could sit and look out. Our shower room was a good size and had natural light. We found that the evening meal had improved and we were very satisfied with the quantity, the quality and the quick service. Unfortunately at breakfast, the only smoked fish available was kippers and I was hoping for another variety. We found all the staff to be very pleasant and the establishment as far as I could see was very clean. We had booked this through Alfa travel on a self drive basis and there was a huge car park which was free, if you were a paying guest. I found it to be good value for money £71 pppn for half board including free glass of wine for evening meal and half price bar drinks and so we will definitely stay there again. I cannot comment on the nightly entertainment as we didn't attend.
Very friendly well run hotel. Excellent staff with a hands on manager who supported his team in all areas. Very good food with a varied choice. Rooms very clean but in need of redecorating. Pay that bit extra and have a sea view....well worth it. Overall a very nice experience.
