This is one place where I always make sure I eat when staying in Bude. The shop front doesn't look the best, but the food is excellent. The menu is mostly fish, and always fresh in-season. It's simply cooked, and not messed around with, so you really get it on your plate at its best. The salads and chips that come with the dishes are also very good. Well worth a visit.
Very unpretentious cafe style presentation with the freshest fish. Just what you would expect from a place run by a fisherman who loves his work. Not a place to Impress people but somewhere to go when you want really good food at a fair price. I would recommend the excellent fresh lobster which was surprisingly affordable.
Had the biggest Fish I have ever seen, opened the oblong cardboard box and couldn't see the chips because the Cod was massive. The chips were crisp and perfect. The Gentleman running the establishment also offered to fill my flask with boiling water as I was travelling from resort to resort. An experienced Fisherman of 40 years, kind and helpful. If you live in Bude you must eat here, unbelievable quality.
Very average chips, clearly cooked from frozen. Grim grey meat pasty. Kids didn't even finish their REVOLTING frozen chicken nuggets which speaks volumes. Worst though was the RUDE STAFF. When we went in we were the only customers, and they had really loud R&B playing so we couldn't hear ourselves speak, let alone order. Asked them to turn it down which they did. Then about ten minutes later it went on twice as loud as before, and when I asked the uninterested staff to turn it down, they did but then the older guy who seemed to be in charge started making loud comments about the fact that it wasn't a boring cafe like all the others, and generally making it verbally clear that he was irritated at being asked to turn it down to a reasonable level. He turned it off completely as if to make a point. Really poor customer service, extremely rude staff, very average food. Would not recommend nor reattend.
The restaurant appears a little dated but the food was to a very high standard, comes in good portions and was very reasonably priced. The fish is fresh and the batter is light and crispy and not greasy at all.
My wife and I visited this restaurant yesterday and while my wife's cod and chips were fine , my small breakfast was not . Because I have a medical condition which means I can't eat white bread I asked the server if I could have wholemeal toast instead ,he said I could have granary bread which would be ok . When my breakfast arrived it was greasy and overcooked and I had white toast ! When I went to pay I told them I had ordered granary toast but got white which I can't eat , the owner told me it was my fault if I have an allergy I should have told them . I did not get what I had ordered .He also said to me " you don't have to come in here , in fact I would prefer it if you didn't " . What a way to speak to a customer. When we are in Bude we normally eat in one or two other restaurants ,but yesterday they were both too busy . We have not had a meal in Scrummies for years and would not go back if it was the only place in town . Rude staff , poor quality food and poor value . The place also needed a good clean . If you like to gamble with you health this is the place for you otherwise AVOID .
I asked for lemon sole and chips. Sadly the chips were awful and the sole was mushy along with sections of uncooked batter I have really been wanting to try their lobster and would have had there been any. One meal there never to return.
Pretty good cafe frequented by locals always a good sign as well as tourists. Reasonable prices in this cosy cafe. No contactless payment so come armed with cash.
Basic Greasy food served without a smile. Unkempt staff and scruffy interior that looks badly in need of an update . The inside of cafe is like stepping back into the 80s and the food sadly is minging.
I have been there. It was nice. But I don’t enjoy food in general. I am desperate for friends. When I saw the boy that was working there my heart melted. I wanted to be a friend of his. But I know it’s impossible;
