Such a great location! The walk was quite long, I dont think we made it halfway because we went there on the warmest day of the year Dohh!
Beautiful view and a great hike up to the tower!
Brilliant country park near Newtownards that incorporates Killynether woods, Scrabo tower, the south and north quarries. There's good free carparking that has the woods on one side and the tower and quarries on the other side. It's possible to do a 35 minute circular walk in Killynether woods that takes you to a small lake and back to the carpark, but it can be rocky and steep in parts. The tower is a 10 minute steep walk from the carpark and is an iconic building with great views of Strangford Lough. I would recommend the 50 minute return walk from the carpark to the north quarry, which has a narrow entrance between rocks and feels like a hidden valley. It's easy to spend 2 hours walking around the woods, tower and quarry. There's toilet facilities at the carpark and picnic tables at various points in the park. There's an information board in the carpark with all the walks details.
Well, it's okay fo a walk in the woods but nothing special. Its a walk through trees. Pleasant enough for the most part. Parts of the path are a little steep so not suited for everyone. Best if you like dogs as no one seems to keep them on a lead. There are toilet facilities in the car park if you need them.
Scrabo Country Park is like a second home for me since getting my Whippit Lurcher Méabh Maeve. I am not a photographer and like most people use my phone as a camera. You can see how beautiful the different light and scenery is at the various seasons and weather. You can have clear views from Scrabo Tower on a good day looking over Helens Tower towards Scotland, and the opposite direction the Castlewellan Hills and Mourne Mountains. The Tower in which my ancestors ran a Tea Shop overlooks the town of Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula. Beautiful sunrise over Strangford Lough or Loch Cuan in Old Irish is a sight worth getting up early to witness. Below to the right top corner of the Lough is Rough Island reached at low tide by a raised pathway but be careful not to get caught out by the incoming tide. Ask local people anything about Rough Island will be met with a blank expression as it is universally known as Island Hill, the historic common name probably because it is an Island with a bit of a hill. It is also an ancient neolithic settlement where flint arrowheads can be found if you know what to look for among the flint shards. Behind Scrabo Hill and Tower is Killynether Forest with various natural walks of differing difficulty as the forest is set into the hillside. Enjoy a relaxing day and take a flask of coffee or bbq picnic in the walled Garden or numerous picnic tables with bbq safe fitting and fireproof bin. Please make sure your bbq has burnt out as you don't want to risk this lovely park.
It's good place to hike with kids. There is a pond in which you can see swans and ducks. But now in winter season you can not enter the tower.
Always a pleasure to walk up to the tower and look across the peninsula and over to Belfast. I have moved out of the area and it's one of the first stops on my return. Parking is easy, walking is a bit harder as it's up a relatively steep but tarmacked and level path to the 'summit'. No frills and nothing to do except park and walk BUT it does have a toilet at the car park.
Great place for an energetic walk - rewarded with stunning views!
Lovely views from the top, we just called to the Tower as we could see it in the distance and wondered where it was, a steep walk up to it, might not be suitable for and one with walking or breathing difficulties, luckily there are seats placed on the way up the hill to rest, lovely spot fight beside the golf course
The views around newtownards, to newcastle, and belfast, and on a very clear day to Scotland are amazing.. I wasn't actually in the park, but at the golf club, little hidden gem.
