THE ACADEMIC TEAM

Dr Dave Camlin

The HE & Research team is led by Dave Camlin, a musician whose professional portfolio includes performance, composition, teaching, organisational development, management and research. He’s performed all over the world as a singer / song-writer and with a variety of bands, including Mouthful, The Coast Road, Human Music, Tryckster and Altar Native. The founding Creative Director of Cumbrian music organisation SoundWave from 2005-10, he was also one of the organisers of Solfest music festival from 2002-2015.

He completed his Professional Doctorate (DProf) in 2015, using Action research to investigate the situation of undergraduate learning within Sage Gateshead’s artistic programme, revealing an ‘integrative’ model of ‘music in three dimensions’ which emphasises the inter-dependence between three dimensions of music’s power: the aesthetic (presentational), the praxial (participatory), and the transformational (social). With a growing international profile for his academic work, he teaches across both programmes in subjects such as song writing, vocal arranging and leading, ensemble leadership, performance development, professional studies, research / study skills and academic development.

Dr Paul Edis

Described as ‘a brilliant young pianist’ (Alyn Shipton, The Guardian) Paul Edis is a performer, composer, educator and promoter based in the North East England.

From an early age Paul was composing and performing regularly, forming his own bands and promoting concerts. After receiving a scholarship to study composition at the London College of Music, Paul quickly became an integral part of the Jazz department and began performing regularly in London.

He moved back to the North East after completing his degree and began studying for an MA and then PhD in Composition at the University of York. At the same time, he began to work regularly in the area, performing with the Voice of the North Jazz Orchestra and backing touring soloists (including John Faddis, Julien Siegel, Alan Barnes, Tony Kofi amongst others). He established a regular jazz night at the Side Café in Newcastle (which later inspired the regular Splinter at the Bridge sessions) and formed his own trio and then sextet.

His sextet released their debut album There Will Be Time in 2012 to critical acclaim (critic Alyn Shipton voted it his 3rd favourite release that year behind Courtney Pine and Brad Mehldau!). He has since released two solo albums and a second Sextet CD. Reviewing Paul’s recent solo CD Just Like Me critic Brian Morton described Paul as ‘a significant new voice in British Jazz’. His music has been performed on the radio in the UK, in Europe and in the US. In 2014 his sextet toured the UK, including dates at the Sage, Vortex, Manchester and Lancaster jazz festivals.

Paul also works as an Educator, and has recently been appointed course leader of the BMus Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music degree at the Sage, Gateshead. He regularly gives workshops, talks and masterclasses for musicians of all ages.

He promotes successful jazz concert series in Durham and Newcastle, and in 2016 he directed the first ever Ushaw Jazz Festival.

Paul regularly receives commissions for new music. In 2016 Ushaw College commissioned Paul to compose a 45-minute work to celebrate the feast of St. Cuthbert. This new work comprised elements of jazz, folk and contemporary classical music. A studio recording of the suite will be released in 2017 in addition to a new duo CD with Vasilis Xenopoulos due for release in Autumn 2016.

Ian Paterson

Bassist Ian Paterson is in high demand, giving performances at Glastonbury, on BBC Radio, recording for film and TV alongside regular tours throughout Europe, with bands including Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies, Nick Pride and the Pimptones and with touring shows including the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ theatre show.

Paul Susans

Originally from Ashby-de-la Zouch Leicestershire, Paul first took up Bass 20 years ago. Tutored by Andy Lewis, Dave Sturt and Neil Harland, Paul has built a glowing reputation as a performer and educator.

Paul is an integral part of Newcastle’s own wandering minstrels the Baghdaddies as well as being musicianship tutor on the Sage Gateshead’s B.A. (hons) Community Music degree. Over the years Paul has also been privileged to work with; the Mark Williams trio, Keith Morris, Ruth Lambert, Nitin Sawhney, Lewis Watson and Zoe Gilby.
