Rye House Speedway

Story

Rye House Stadium is a former greyhound racing and current speedway venue in Rye House near Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It is situated adjacent to the River Lea Navigation.OriginsThe name Rye House originates from a collection of medieval buildings on an area known as the Isle of Rye due to the fact that the land was directly next door to the River Lea/Lee and in particular the Lee Navigation. When the stadium was constructed in 1935 it was put next door to Rye House on a spare plot which is where the name for the stadium came from. Rye House had been the family home for the Parr family that included Catherine in the 16th century and later a workhouse and tourist attraction in the 19th century. All that remains today of the original Rye House is the gatehouse found to the north of the stadium. The stadium was accessed from Rye Road either in an easterly or westerly direction with Hoddesdon to the west and a large sewage works to the east. The stadiumThe stadium has hosted greyhound racing, speedway and stock car racing. The stadium has recently been upgraded by the owner, Warren Scott. Next to the stadium is Rye House Kart Circuit which was built on a former site of the speedway track.

Friendly and enthusiastic crowd. Lots of money being spent on improvements. Fantastic even if you are not enthusiast you will see something really interesting and dramatic.
Good stadium to watch speedway. One negative that stands out is the lack of lighting in the car park. When entering the stadium at night it's very difficult to see where you are going. When it's wet it is treacherous. Plus points. Ample seating on home straight. Nice bar overlooking the track. Food bar underneath the main stand. Food at Rye House is always good. Fish and chips they serve make the visit worthwhile on it's own!All in all, very good. Need to sort out that lighting though!
Stadium is being renovated as a work on progress but big changes are apparent upon every new visitevery few weeks or so the speedway track looks like it's had massive attention and upgradeswhich is the reason I go therethe whole place certainly looks like it will be a huge improvement on the stadium of 5 years ago and I hope all the efforts will be recognised as a lot of money and hard work has obviously been spent here. Staff at all times have been very helpful and apart from the visitors car park needing some attention to sort out the bumps I can't really say much in the negative about the place.
Place sadly is a dump. Stadium improvements where? Motocross track on the centre green obscures view of second bend. Itzzzzzzzz called a centre green for a reason.....please remove this obstruction! Poor lighting on bends. New KTM building remains an empty shell. Shake me head with what the promotion are trying to achieve. With all the scaffolding it's more like a building site. Take me hard hat next time. Never seen the place looking so bad! Oh, the racing was good.......thought I'd just add that in
This is looking to be a promising development. Some fitness centres are already up and running. I attended the gymnastics centre that was very well organised Place to look out for in the future with good parking and facilities.
Had a great night watching the shale 'gladiators', the best Fish n Chips at any track in the country, bit of a shame the promotion is going through a tough time at the moment, hope everything gets better for the future, this area needs the smell of Castrol R.
Rye House speedway is an excellent, action packed night out for all the family to enjoy! Really good transport links to London Liverpool Street. Couldn't recommend enough!!!
When we last visited Rye House there was top league speedway taking place regularly but that has since folded. May well go again in the future as a team from the "2nd division" of speedway has now moved to race there.
Today i visited Rye House speedway track for their opening press day and practice and i have uploaded some photos of the team practising around the circuit. The 2017 team comprises of the following riders..All seven team members - multi-time British Champions and former Grand Prix stars Scott Nicholls and Chris “Bomber” Harris, Team Captain Edward Kennett, recent Aussie Bronze winner Davey Watt, “Mr Rocket” rider of the year Stuart Robson, breakthrough star Rob Branford and British U-19 runner-up Ellis Perks – were there.
Bring back the bangers! ....Banger racing at Rye House was a weekly highlight for me and my friends back in the day, and now Arena Essex has gone too there's nowhere left without travelling miles!
