Rutland Railway Museum
"Rocks by Rail, the living Ironstone Museum, is the only museum dedicated to the quarrying and transport of Iron Ore in the East Midlands.Showing just some of the machines made by Rustons of Lincoln, Ransome & Rapiers of Ipswich and other quarry machinery companies, the museum tracks the ore from quarrying to dispatch by rail to the Iron and Steel works around the country.Steam passenger trains run along 3/4 mile of restored mineral branch, while trains are loaded and marshalled in the quarry branch by vintage machines.Locomotives and wagons of the iron ore quarries are on display in our purpose built exhibition building, while smaller artifacts are shown in the Woolsthorpe Engine Shed and Sundew Cafe.A great day out."

A fantastic place to visit with really friendly volunteers. The museum contains lots of interesting artifacts and photographs relating to ironstone quarrying in the local area and beyond. The collection of locos and earth movers is impressive and seeing them operating on a running day is a must. The cafe does a roaring trade in bacon rolls and mugs of tea too!
The yard was well run by very friendly and knowledgeable staff. It was an extremely hot day so a ride on the diesel train was on offer as the steam engine was a fire risk to surrounding farm land, but that meant we got to ride upfront in the cab was was cool. Great bacon cob too.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure

Good place to visit if your in to living museums. Train ride good fun... gave it 4 stars & not full five stars just because the lack of a gift shop. They are missing out on so much more income. My my wife & friends spend £20+ in a good gift shop!!
A lovely museum. Spent a couple of hours here on Thursday. The cafe has information about the journey taken by "Sundew" the walking dragline to Corby. Totally amazed how this massive machine "walked" 13 miles in 8 weeks. The cafe does drinks, snacks and bacon butties. The peaceful nature walk has seating along the way, we saw hares, a partridge and dragonflies. The shed houses many quarry locos, and a couple are under restoration in the workshop. Another short walk takes you to Sundew's cab, that really gives you the understanding of how massive the dragline was.
Had a great couple of hours here, staff were helpful and friendly. Cafe served a nice mug of tea and bacon rolls. Drive a diesel for a fiver is good money well spent, all in all a small but interesting place with plenty of old trains used in the quarries. Will definitely be back.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

You probably need to have an interest in industrial railways to fully appreciate this little gem, but even if you don't it's an inexpensive and charming place to spend a little time. Five stars for the buff or industrial historian, three for the average joe. I fall in the middle so I've given it four! Enthusiastic and informative people.
Great little museum. I would recommend going on a running day for a good experience.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Highly recommend the operating days. As many rides as you like and fascinating displays and machinery, with multiple trains running plus excavator. Café is good, reasonably priced and does bacon butties. Nature walk down to remains of Oakham Canal. Brilliant day out for young and old alike.
