Runway Visitor Park at Manchester Airport

Story

A great day out for all the family, the Runway Visitor Park is one of the North West's most popular outdoor attractions. Adjacent to the busy runways of Manchester Airport, the park’s raised viewing areas mean you can stand literally just a few metres away from real ‘live’ planes as they go past, with around 600 aircraft movements – landings and take-offs – every day.

The park is also home to a variety of retired planes, including the spectacular supersonic airliner, Concorde G-BOAC; and former RAF military spy plane, Nimrod. There’s also a DC-10, Avro RJX and a retro Trident airliner, offering a glimpse of what flying was like in the 1960s and 1970s.

In addition to a picnic area, there is also the Concorde Restaurant and coffee house, a play area and The Aviation Shop, which stocks a range of plane-related souvenirs, suitable for children through to the more serious aircraft enthusiasts.

Visitors hoping to see the Emirates A380 super-jumbo on its daily visit to Manchester can watch it arrive at around 11:45am* and depart at around 1.30pm* (*scheduled times, subject to change).

The Runway Visitor Park is located next to Manchester Airport’s runways, two minutes from Junction 6 of the M56 motorway. It’s open daily from 8am except Christmas and Boxing Day.

This has got to be one of the best official aircraft spotting areas across the UK. You can easily spend all day here with food outlets and activities to do on top of the plane spotting. I don’t think you can accurately comprehend how close to the aircraft you actually are until you visit here. It’s made better by the aircraft racing along the taxiway next to the visitor park too! Parking is a little expensive but for the experience is not too bad - although in peak times during school holidays etc. parking can become a little challenging as there isn’t too many spaces so would advise coming early just remember the opening times! Restrooms: Restrooms are provided and there are enough to keep up with demand although I expect during peak times there may be a small queue. Toilets are free of charge. Picnic area: Plenty of picnic benches and seating to enjoy your food whether purchased here or brought with you. There are benches on the grass area and on the viewing deck too.
Surprisingly busy, loads of parking and plenty of space, good cafe with indoor and outside seating. Theres also a viewing platform to watch the planes taking off and landing, but you can see them from anywhere on the site. Play area and amusement rides as well, gift shop and they have Concorde to view. You can buy a tour of the inside of Concorde, we didn’t on this occasion. Free to enter, though you have to pay for parking £5 for 2 hours which is more than enough time. They also have an announcer who talks about all the planes coming in and going out which is a nice touch. Playground: Decent playground wooden climbing frames and swings. Picnic area: Loads of picnic benches and space for your own chairs and blankets if you choose to do so.
Great place to sit, watch and enjoy the comings-and-goings of the runway. Nice playground for kids and old planes to walk on and explore. The Concord cafe serves all that you need, and is located next to the Concord aircraft that you can view for free, or go on board and have a tour for an extra fee. Parking is £5 for upto 4 hours.
A fabulous place frequently visited to observe aircraft’s taking off from Manchester Airport. Commentary provides on some days usually weekends and the holidays. A cafe and ice cream hut on site. A small park and occasional funfairs to keep the little ones entertained. Concorde on site and available tours. Ample parking spaces Paid
Great place to visit, has an observation area to watch aircraft take off and land. Our granddaughter loved it. There's also a shop to buy Aircrafts models and related memorabilia. Has a nice restaurant with plenty of seating, this was really popular with families . Parking prices vary as to how long that you stay , as you pay on exit. You are given a token to denote what time you arrived. We were there for over three hours and paid £10 for the parking. To be honest I didn't mind the price. There is also air craft there to look around inside and out. There's also children's fair ground rides and very large bouncy castle. Playground: The play area is a decent size, with the safety rubber floor slide and swings climbing Frames Restrooms: Nice clean toilets and baby changing room. Picnic area: Has picnic area with tables and benches.
Amazing day out with family especially if you get a dry day. Situated around 50ft from the runway and around 20ft from the taxiway you get some amazing views of both take off and landing patterns and if you bring a picnic it can cost you just £10 all day. Cafe available on site slightly pricey but and a little hectic during busy periods. Overall I would recommend all aviation enthusiasts to head on down. Opening times vary depending on time of year Playground: Large open outdoor play area for children and a small fairground area at the back of the park Restrooms: Plenty of restrooms facilities situated around the park well maintained and clean Picnic area: Plenty of table and benches for you to sit around relax and enjoy a bite to eat why you watch the planes go by
Fantastic venue. The runway visitor park has brilliant views. We also did the Platinum Concorde tour which was outstanding. Our tour guide Bob had so much knowledge and made it so interesting. A special mention to Commander Bond Definitely not Owen Wilson who went above and beyond to make our daughters Birthday tour extra special. Recommend tour for all to see this iconic aircraft.
Fantastic place to visit for a day out watching aircraft.. Concord tour was well worth booking. Guy giving the tour was super friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely be returning! Playground: Neat little selection of fairground rides. Restrooms: Good, but little smelly. Picnic area: Plenty of space to sit and enjoy a picnic.
This is such a brilliant day out! If you went for the full day it would cost £12 for a car. But for the amount of entertainment on offer it's actually quite good value. You could stay for a full day if the weather is good. You can bring a picnic and just watch the planes all day. There is also a climbing frame and lots of space for children so it's a fun day out for all the family. For transport buffs there is also the Concorde experience yes 204 feet of engineering brilliance so if you are in the area and the weather is good then get yourself down there!
You go here to watch planes take off and land at Manchester airport. After flying in only an our before, my 5 year old wanted to go as he hadn't had enough of planes. It was £10 for parking which I thought was a little steep. Theres a cafe with a fairly decent fast food menu; I was impressed by the fully loaded pizza chips. Plenty of outside space for a picnic if you preferred. You have chance to go on a Concord for £6 pp sort tour which is sadly sat in it's hanger forever since grounded. It's a very informative tour, but the lady taking the tour was really struggling with the heat as the aircon unit onboard really didn't help. Perhaps there's a better way to help here? There's a few other aircraft dotted around but nothing quite as special. You'll find a gift shop, and this one sells many aircraft models, but again steep prices £15 for small plastic pull back plane toy Outside in the summer they're ready to sting you with very highly inflated micro transactions for bouncy castle, trampoline, dodgems etc. It's also got it's own ice cream van and plenty of wasps to go with it....but if you don't want to pay, they have a great play area. With a few options for viewing the aircraft being the field with picnic benches or the raised platform helping you see over security fence it's about the only option to watch the planes without either being in the airport or parking illegally risking your car being towed elsewhere on the airport boundary. I think three cherry on top which makes it all very interesting is the expert aircraft enthusiasts say I'm the middle outside in a raised cabin with loud speaker telling you all about each plane that fly's in. They're quite funny sometimes, incredibly knowledgeable., a great addition to have and keep there at weekends. I do think you need to make their cabin a more permanent building though instead of the trailer thing they're in. One last thing, the WiFi is shocking and the mobile signal didn't work. Perhaps someone needs to look into the WiFi and how to boost it when overloaded with people.
