Want to say an absolutely enormous thank you to Pete and Nicky for being our saviours on Sunday night. After so many people were stranded because of the sudden snow, they opened their pub and made sure whoever needed a space could have one. Travelling with 2 young children I genuinely believe they stopped a bad situation for us from becoming a tragic one. They also never once asked for a single penny. True community heroes. A special thanks also to their neighbours for supplies and in particular Eddie, who organised everything and acted completely selflessly all night. They were the only local establishment to offer help in Hawkhurst and we as a family are truly thankful. It's a shame other pubs in the area were not so forthcoming. We are not local to Hawkhurst, but I suggest if you are ever in the area to try this pub - run by good people, who care. Thank you.
Nipped in to royal oak after refurbishment, staff so lovely and welcoming. Good drink dirty fries are fab. What topped it off was arty the most beautiful cream German shepherd ever ,his a pub dog so friendly ,highly recommended and defo return in future xxService: 5/5
Have to give a massive THANK YOU to the absolutely wonderful staff at the Royal Oak. And their neighbours!! We were stranded due to the snow, they worked so hard to help as many people as possible, converted their function room and dining room with mattresses, blankets and anything that they could borrow to help people. Thank you, thank you so very much!!!! Xxx
A 17th Century property with a few reasonably priced comfortable rooms for overnight stays. Our room was very clean with ample white fluffy towels . There was sufficient room for a few nights stay. Our room at the rear had a nice view across the country side. Bed was comfy. Staff were very pleasant and very helpful . We only ate breakfast, which was served promptly and we enjoyed. One small issue was car parking. Its a large car park but accommodates relatively few cars for its size because cars simply park around the edge in unmarked spots. Perhaps better marked out parking spaces might help the issue.
The staff are fabulous! Let’s get that said at the start! The young lady behind the bar who greeted us for our stay could not have been more friendly and personable and it was a lovely welcome. This quality friendly service was echoed by the owner at good breakfast the next morning. I so want to give more than the three stars but there were a few things that frustratingly brought things down. We arrived early Friday evening and I was gasping for a pint of famous Sussex ale but they had none on, only lager.. Our room was acceptable but it would’ve been nice to have had at least one plug point near the bed and bizarrely when we turned the lights out there appeared by default one of those green bright lights one normally finds in the corridor to guide you out of the building in case of a power cut or Fire Alarm…in our bedroom!! There was no way to deactivate it and it was like trying to sleep under a green street light. There was then loud and continuous shouting from drunken customers outside until way after midnight with no seeming to bother to ask them to be considerate of guests staying the night. I didn’t sleep much and my wife not at all due to the green light in the room. We’d return not to stay but for the warm staff welcome and hopefully a pint of Sussex bitter available. Potential.
Didn't know building work was being carried out on the hotel. Would have been nice to have been informed when booking as this greatly restricted parking. Scaffolding blocking windows so no view of the busy main road on which the Royal Oak is sited. No hot water in the room for a bath or shower this morning. I went down to investigate but no-one around. Not a pleasant experience having to have a cold shower. Seems that is a regular occurrence so beware.
Excellent service- called on a Sunday to book in that night for 2 rooms due to lack of power at home. Hosts went above and beyond to help settle us and our children and stayed on late to cook us an amazing roast. Room was warm and clean. Thank you!
One of the best hosts ever I have stayed with. We stayed overnight at this hotel for a my son's grammar school exams. The host not only welcomed us and made is feel at home. She went over the top to ensure we had a pleasant stay and be at the exams before time and well fed, even it meant she had to come in earlier than her usual time. Thanks again for make over stay a memorable experience.
Very empty in the restaurant, so we had a choice of tables. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Since I only wanted a small snack and they don't do sandwiches, I ordered some cheesy fries. I'm not normally a fan of fries, but I was pleasantly surprised. Tasty, perfect portion and crispy, well fried. Not a hint of soggy chips. Happy we went here.
A really lovely pub with great service! The drinks are very reasonably priced and the food is great! We stayed for one night after doing the Go Ape at Bedgebury. It was pretty close and offered good value. When we arrived, there was live music a band called Reyes which was excellent. The staff were super friendly and helpful and by the end of the night we felt like locals! Highly recommended for a night out or an overnight stay
